I am very saddened that Zionism is Racism motion has passed. I was on the list as the next speaker against the motion, but was not called. I wrote two different speeches depending on whether the amendment protecting Jewish members was passed. Here they are below:
If A3 fails:
Joshua Alston, Leeds Green Party, I am a Jewish antizionist.
I joined Jewish Greens in 2018 because of an incident in my local party. Four members of my local party signed a letter accusing me of being a Zionist and a mossad agent because of a position I took in defence of trans rights. It was nothing to do with Israel.
They assumed I was a Zionist because I was a Jew who disagreed with them. I’ve been called a Zionist dozens of time since then.
As an antizionist Jew I have to fight twice as hard, be twice as loud and obnoxious to be persuade people that I am an anti-Zionist and for some people it just isn’t enough.
For non-Jews this isn’t a question that gets asked. If you search Zack Polanski is a Zionist you get loads of hits. No-one says Mothin or Rachel are Zionists.
So I am worried about this motion. I don’t think anti-Zionism is racism. I am an anti-Zionist. But I do think there’s a double standard in society.
Some people say Zionist when they mean Jew.
I know the proposers and trust that they don’t think like this. But most of the rest of the country won’t trust them. They will think awful things of us.
There is another way. We could declare that anti-Palestinian racism and Islamophobia are racisms. We vote for E03 and focus on the material changes that we need for Palestinian freedom. We can focus on stopping the genocide. We can focus on BDS. We can stand up against the proscription of Palestine action.
The Green Party vision is a world where all are free. This takes us backwards. We should vote it down.
If A3 does pass:
Josh Alston. I’m from Leeds Green Party. I am a Jewish anti-Zionist who has spent most of my adult life talking to the Jewish community about Israel, and helping build coalitions for Palestinian liberation.
In my community 64% of people describe themselves as Zionists, but only 12% are pro-Netanyahu. They have criticisms of Israeli racism, but they still call themselves Zionists.
So what do they think?
They like the idea of a place Jews can go in the event of a genocide in Europe, but don’t like the way Israel treats Palestinians. I see this as an opportunity. We’re a party about organising. We’re a party about convincing people.
So how do we talk people round?
Any organiser knows we start from points of connection and the material conditions in Palestine. We start from disgust at the genocide. We talk about settlements. We talk about BDS. We talk about corruption. We talk about apartheid. We talk about Israel’s connection with the far-right. We talk about impunity. We talk about how we can make Jews safe without an ethnostate.
If we start by calling them racist, we will lose those people and they won’t come back.
There are real stakes here. We’ve seen a genocide live streamed in front of eyes. With this profound evil, if someone thinks that the idea of a Zionism, the idea of a Jewish national homeland in Palestine can be separated from the reality of Israel’s as a state I .think they are wrong. But that’s not the most important question for the Green Party.
The question is ‘what are you going to do to stop the genocide and make Palestine free?’
Let’s organise not exclude and build a coalition for a free Palestine. Thank you.

A very long day but an amazing evening listening to residents as we head into the final day of campaigning. Rent controls, water nationalisation and tackling the climate crisis. Come campaign with us tomorrow! linktr.ee/HSP_6thGreenMP

Sian and others like me just see it as strategically terrible and a poorly written motion with a spirit of division. There's really no point getting into Zionism and racism and this and that because it's all bollocks really. It's not the issue.

I'm well aware lots of Jewish people support the motion, but no single person speaks for their entire demographic, I was speaking about the specific ones who do want reassurance. An amendment was voted on specifically saying Jewish people are safe to worship at synagogue, it was voted down.

Weird purity testing, he supported the amendment. Just because that doesn't fit into your little character you've created doesn't mean it isn't true.

I noticed that the emergency motion on opposing the trans surgery ban had around 100 fewer voters online even though that was in the middle of all the ZiR stuff, so they still would have been there.

They have not said anything, it would be very easy to calm tensions. The vote had 45% against and it was very emotional for people on both sides. Don't you think it's just an easy thing to do to come out and support party unity and reassure our fellow Jewish members who are worried?...

I hope the proposers can now follow up to announce unequivocally that they support Jewish members who attend synagogue and other Jewish institutions in the United Kingdom As much as, as an E motion, it cannot enforce that. It's still important to say that they don't want that for our Jewish members

Following the vote on the anti-Zionist policy at Green Party Conference, the 5 Green MPs, the Leader and Co-Deputy Leaders have issued a joint statement
A green background with white text that reads: Joint Statement As Greens, we will always uphold universal human rights. We will never tolerate any form of discrimination or harassment. We will continue to stand in opposition to genocide, ethnic cleansing, apartheid and the illegal occupation. We will continue to call out the heinous crimes of the Netanyahu government. And we will continue to work to ensure that the Green Party is an anti-racist party in every way. We know there is no conflict between supporting the rights of Palestinians and the rights of Jewish people. Yeah it was nice to be followed by them as I back their motion, both sides are bad in Iran that's unequivocally true. That's of course in contrast to Palestine where one side is being genocided by an invasive settler colonialist regime. Anyway, I don't believe in hell and you're wrong.

One of the lines the authors of ZiR say is 'Palestinians will liberate themselves'. I think the idea they will liberate themselves is also ridiculous, we need to help them and give them to the platform to self determine by sanctions Israel. ZiR will hurt our ability to do this, it needs amending.

The motion is more than just the title, it's the text of the motion that needs editing it's very poorly written and will cause a lot of issues. I think the difficulty is when people have been saying they want to edit the text they get attacked for it by the proposers...

AssadaTGP @sweetassada.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
The motion is more than just the title, obviously Zionism is racist in practice but there are various issues that need to be addressed. The proposers refuse any discussion around the motion and refuse any amendments. It's essentially poorly written and yet heavily backed.

They should have been open about it from the start I agree but it was known all MPs, Zack and Rachel were against the motion for a while and Carla was scheduled to speak against the motion at spring conference on behalf of the MPs. Unfortunately it's difficult to go against G4P, but it's right.

As someone who is against ZiR and in favour of E03 this idiot does not represent the green members who are against ZiR. Genocide denier can attack his anti-Semite opposite number in David Miller, they are both scum.

Zionism is definitely racist in practice, there are just a bunch of issues with the motion. 'Zionism is Racism' is just the title don't forget. It's just been very hard to argue to change a motion that has such emotion hanging on it, especially with the author's insistence that it remains unamended

No, E03 actively removes the party policy that supports a 2SS. It then advocates for the self determination of the all people in the region. E02 both keeps a 2SS and advocates for a 1SS. It is just a poorly written motion unfortunately.

AssadaTGP @sweetassada.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
I think this is really disappointing. E02 keeps a 2SS whilst E03 removes it. Palestinians helped with the creation of E03. It's clearly an antizionist motion that is strategically better at supporting Palestinians. I'm not sure why you're lying, but I'm assuming you've been informed incorrectly.

I'm really not worried about us being officially anti Zionist or not when we are clearly de facto anti Zionist. If we wasn't then we wouldn't pass incredibly strong BDS motions near unanimously whilst some of those same voters will speak out on the floor against ZiR for being strategically empty.

AssadaTGP @sweetassada.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
E03 also calls for the end to the proscription of PA too. I'm fine with declaring us an antizionist party but I'm not sure what that does? Or why it's historic. Ultimately feels more like patting ourselves on the back for materially changing nothing, whilst hurting us electorally for many reasons.

AssadaTGP @sweetassada.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
I agree that it's a problem that we look like we're holding back support for Palestine, unfortunately the motion has been advertised in that way. Realistically E02 actually does nothing it's just rhetoric. Rhetoric is absolutely important, but we're passing BDS D motions that are actually effective

Hi Sian, Zionism in practice is racist, however this motion is obviously not the way to achieve Palestinian liberation and the motions proposers refuse to engage in good faith. Can we ask you to alternatively support E03, which seeks to support Palestinians in a more effective way?
