I am reminded of this great Kate Beaton cartoon. And honestly? Same, chicas.

Kate Beaton cartoon of the Charlotte and Emily Bronte mooning over asshole men, and making fun of Anne for not getting it.

Day 19: Andy Kubert #comicskycoverartists This one was tough for me as I dislike the 90’s Marvel house style, but this one works for me because of the muscle-dad in the front with the brooding sex-stare and the giant phallic smoking gun between his legs. Unf. Who is the character, I don’t know GIJ?

Dramatic posing of eight GI Joe characters. In the front here is a muscular blond bearded guy in torn clothing crouched with an enormous smoking gun between his legs. He looks like he’s going to fuck the shit out of you. 🩶

I read Rachel Reid’s book Heated Rivalry back in the day when I was exploring this strange world of gay romance novels written by women. This was probably the best one of the bunch, so I’m delighted it’s now a steamy new TV series about hockey players. And oh my god the hockey butts!

The closest I will ever get to this level of internet fame is that when people post the Henry Cavill fist-reload as reaction gif on tumblr they're using my gif-cap

A movie that takes place where you’re from.

Still of the movie Crash by David Cronenberg. On the left is James Spader, on the right Elias Koteas who is driving them in a car.

I am absolutely convinced that Mantlo (who was a lawyer) wrote this scene with at least some understanding of the trouble trans people have when their identification doesn’t match their gender expression.

Third, he gave Madison Jefferies his well deserved star turn, with a compelling Cain and Abel backstory (that I so wish current authors using him as their fixit tech guy would reference more) and a blue collar charm that is probably as close as we get to a comment on class in the book 4/4

Secondly, Mantlo queered the book in a way that no one has had the courage to do since, when his famous Northstar AIDS plot was nixed, he was like fine: “I’m going to make sure everybody knows Jim S blocked it, AND I’m gonna make the most hypermasculine character on the team transgender.” 3/4

Mantlo still is to this day the only Alpha Flight writer to make a significant comment on the history of colonization of Indigenous people in Canada, by crafting a disease-causing villain who was a literal white colonist, Pestilence, who devastates the Indigenous characters on the team. 2/4

@whynotpodcast.bsky.social I enjoyed your episode about issue 50 of Alpha Flight. This is an obvious inflection point in the Mantlo run and as such I thought I’d bring up 3 things that are neat about those first 21 issues that can get lost in all the talk about the rough parts: 1/4
