Yesterday, as I was welcomed into the DEI committee, I remembered being deliberately excluded from my former university’s committee because I pushed back against the administrators’ toxic framing. The guy who excluded me is now the president there.

A friend had to clear her cupboards for medical reasons. I got many things from her, including onion soup mix which I have not bought in almost 40 years. The onion dip made from that and sour cream is just as delicious as I remembered.

Last day of classes for our autistic preK-4 students. Learning how to communicate with nonverbal kids has been a gift to me this past year, starting in February when I was assigned a 1:1 role with a new kindergartener and continuing through extended school year. I'm still learning.

I’m in my last week working in a pre-K summer classroom with autistic kids and I’ve loved every minute. Today the women running the program let me know they think I’m awesome. I worked so long in a toxic environment. I love the healing that’s happening.

Pssst. I think I finally have a job! Details to come when contract is signed, sealed, delivered. I have been working since I left academia, but working at jobs, that, while interesting, were not the jobs for me. I have been continually on the job market since 2021, so I am relieved.

I am so unbelievably lucky to work with so many immigrants. I lived for a very long time in an un-diverse place and worked in an even less-diverse institution. This new life of mine seems like such a blessing, even when my work week has been as hard as it was this week.

Any tips for hanging out with a nonverbal 5 year old with autism? Until we get him an IEP, I'm a 1:1 aide. I plan to engage in a lot of play and walk around with him. (He's a wanderer.) Of course my main job is still to get 23 other students through the hallways, lunch, and recess. We'll see.
