I have started a new job at the University of Maryland as Associate Professor, jointly appointed in Government and Politics and the AI Interdisciplinary Institute at Maryland. After 8 great years at Purdue, I am now excited to build something new and connect with DC folks on AI governance.

In 2021, whistleblower Frances Haugen shared internal Facebook documents with Congress. The Facebook Papers form part of the archive I use to write a new political history of the company, including how growth came at the expense of the Global South. This platform playbook is now repeating in AI.

Cyber barons, tech overlords, digital empires: Big Tech is associated with rule, but what does this mean? My new article theorizes Platform Rule through a political history of Facebook. I argue for a macro social science in the tradition of Mann, Tilly, and Scott to study tech power. Open access!

Meta may well get what it wanted--the demolition of a growing competitor and the migration of its users. The 2020 India TikTok ban is instructive: an early flowering of alternatives, followed by consolidation at Instagram and YouTube. But many creators simply failed to rebuild elsewhere.
