I think there are a lot more people out there now treating both writing and publishing as a side hustle. And we have the means now to absolutely flood the market; we've certainly got down to business doing that. The sad truth is, there may well be far more supply than demand.

This is why I'm closed to submissions. It's easier not to give myself that frustration when I'm here to enjoy what I do. With our Uncertainties anthology series, I keep asking editors if they want to do open submissions. The answer has never been yes. It's a shame.

It seems to go beyond just reading submission guidelines and verging sometimes on utter lack of common sense . . . and I find that baffling sometimes because I'm a reader more than a publisher, so I'm innately passionate for and interested in publishers, particularly small press.

*I also get a lot of submissions for epic fantasy novels (often pitched as a series) focusing on Irish mythology and folklore. Once I received a submission for a cookbook. And years ago, one for a book on Irish property law. ("I know this isn't usually wht you publish, but...")

Just an observation, but the majority of writers who submit their work to us don't seem to know fundamentally what we publish. Or our ethos. Or even read our books. They'll add bizarre notes like "I know you only publish Irish writers, but..." swanriverpress.ie/about/submis...

Ah yes, well, in that case there's not much you can do. The paperback ships from the UK because that's where the POD facility. The hardback ships from Ireland, which is in Europe.

I just watched FALLING STARS. Its low-key excellent. An intriguing premise, they build a small world around it and just go for broke. An inventive take on witch folklore. Recommended.
