yes TLDR: 3 corps: police nationale, gendarmerie, police municipale en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Law_enf...
Law enforcement in France is centralized at the national level. Recently, legislation has allowed local governments to hire their own police officers which are called the police municipale. "11

There are two national police forces, the National Police and the National Gendarmerie. The Prefecture of Police of Paris provides policing services directly to Paris as a subdivision of France's Ministry of the Interior. Within these national forces, only certain designated police officers have the power to conduct criminal investigations, which are supervised by investigative magistrates.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mancheg... But it'd depends on your personal taste, really
• Fresco: fresh cheese is aged for 2 weeks. It has a rich but mild flavour, not a true queso manchego due to its lack of ageing.'?! Produced in small quantities, it is rarely found outside Spain.

• Semicurado: semifirm, semicured cheese aged for 3 weeks to 3-4 months, somewhat milder than curado. • Curado: semifirm cured cheese aged for 3-6 months with a caramel and nutty flavour. • Viejo: aged for 1-2 years, firm with a sharper flavour the longer it is aged; it has a rich, deep pepperiness to it. It grates well, but

can also be eaten on its own or on tapas. 12]

Is there is a category error? It's not just "computers" that are being used to "construct and verify proofs" or "reason across more of [the law] than any lawyer could possibly hold in mind". It is *expensive* computational systems that do. Which centers the debate around one of a tech power grab.
The analogy here is computational mathematics. Computers have been doing mathematics for a long time. But increasingly, they are being used to construct and verify proofs so complicated that no human being can realistically follow every step. Al is pushing that development much further. This has generated considerable excitement and consternation among mathematicians because it raises an awkward question: What does it mean to understand a proof if a machine can produce or verify it but no person can fully grasp it? Law is heading toward its own version of that problem. What does it mean to understand the law if a machine can reason across more of it than any lawyer could possibly hold in mind? What counts as legal reasoning, legal knowledge, or even legal expertise under those conditions?

I think it's both. The Al risk doesn't solely originate from TechBro comms. It also comes from people who invented the stuff (eg Hinton) and who resigned from Al firms. The issue with conspiracy theories is that they can encourage both complacency and passivity. I don't think either are justified. 8:04 PM • Oct 2, 2026+ Follow

OpenAI, of course, stands by its safety practices, and maintains that it is being careful enough. I did not make my decision to leave the company lightly. I believe that this technology can be useful and valuable. My former colleagues are smart, work hard, and try to make good choices. But as the company sprints from one launch to the next, it is failing to achieve the level of care that I believe is needed. Now I plan to work on the outside, in the hope that I can help more people understand the risks I saw, and strengthen the incentives OpenAl and other firms have to be safer. Like other colleagues, I'm figuring out exactly what that means. After I quit, I enlisted a PR firm, Spitfire Strategies, to help me navigate the attention and scrutiny that I realize I may now receive. But the decision to speak out is mine alone.

A man in a grey suit and hat is behind a seated woman, talking at her. The woman is wearing all black and clearly, from her expression, bot enjoying the conversation. She stares at the viewer as if the ask for help.

Paying attention to data center infrastructures provides a counterpoint to the Cold War-era-esque narratives, revealing the way Al infrastructures harm entire lifeworlds and communities. Uruguayan researcher Daniel Pena notes that the large scale infrastructures currently required to maintain generative Al's operation and to sustain the constant promises of accelerating and archiving AGI, "are extractivist projects that come to the Global South to use cheap water, tax-free land, and very poorly paid jobs". As he elaborates: "[a]nd then they don't contribute to our country; they don't improve our internet access". The constantly increasing scale of expansion of data centre infrastructures (Hao 2025, 284) for Silicon Valley-based companies in countries like Chile and Uruguay, coupled with the lack of accountability to the local population, reproduces and accelerates previous patterns of colonialism. As Schutze puts it: "[a]lgorithmic colonialism moves along and intensifies the same lines as the climate crisis does. Commonly, those who suffer the most from climate effects are also the ones exploited and expropriated by the Al industry" (Schütze 2024, 23). The violence of the technological determinism embedded in the idea of developing AGI moves along the lines of imperial plunder and resource extraction embedded in colonial modernity's formation.

Yet the "AI" loving dorks *dare* to whine about their critics being too political. I wonder why (not) 🤔
The paper argues that the AI ethics research community faces two interdependent challenges. First, there is a need to build a research agenda free from the influence of tech industry funding. Secondly, much AI ethics research has been defensively carried out in response to the urgent need to clean up after the tech industry. Indeed, such research efforts have contributed valuable insights. However, there is a need to bring politics to design to the forefront and frame an emancipatory research agenda to increase attention to the challenges facing vulnerable groups, i.e., those who are seldom heard despite being the ones most negatively affected by AI initiatives.

"AI" makes every day stupider than the day before case in point 👇
One of the most heated discussions occurring on X at the moment is about the ethics of a GitHub project in which a person is running Saw-like "torture" and

"pain" experiments on a series of locally hosted large language models, causing a series of effective altruists and people who believe LLMs are sentient to beg GitHub to delete the project on the grounds that the Al is suffering and that this glorified text adventure game is somehow cruel. The saga is an outgrowth of several recent viral papers and blog posts that have sparked a wildly tiresome conversation about Al consciousness and the idea of "model welfare," which is essentially worrying about the "mental health" of Al bots and agents.

Talking about starting a Pile-on... Like these folks don't have any shame, their actions are out in the open. Iris van Rooij is being DARVOed after some entitled men erased her academic achievements. 😒
Jeremy Pober @jpober.bsky.social • 1h I saw you being dismissive to a philosopher who challenges the idea that compatability means Turing-computability. It was unfortunate because I'd potentially be interested in your claims about what is or is not computable, but if you don't have a more expansive concept, you're attacking a strawman 2 Iris van Rooij . I genuinely have no idea what you are talking about. 1 Jeremy Pober @jpober.bsky.social • 59m Yeah it took me a minute to remember, but you're the one who pulled out a random reply I made two months ago so your followers could laugh about how white male postdocs are all so entitled. 1 Iris van Rooij ! 1 You are right, we need to think of the poor white male postdocs. My bad. Jeremy Pober @jpober.bsky.social • 57m No, you just need to not be an asshole to people you don't know Jeremy Pober @jpober.bsky.social • 54m In what world do you think this is acceptable behavior? Scouring bluesky for months-old replies so you, with tenure, could put a postdoc on blast in the name of...what? Because I think Al's lack consciousness for different reasons than yours? Or are you just trawling for academics who look like me? 2

"name searched" 🤷
A cartoon in two panels

1. a group of cartoon characters sits around a round table, from left to right, one of them has a pair of sheets of paper in front of them, the second a cartoon glass of cartoon water, the last making an unamused face has a cartoon laptop, a signs hangs from the ceiling with the words "assumption club"
2. the cartoon character on the left says: "so I think we all know why we're here"

It's funny (not) how fast a "problem with the affordances of the platforms" needs to be "dealt with" when a prominent Black scholar refuses to be harassed and piled-on by pro-"AI" dorks and uses the platform in a way that expresses this refusal. (Oh, and TIL that a suspension is an incentive, lol)
Scoiattolo @scarnecchia.net • 6h For the sake of discussion, lets accept that "They don't even really mean to brigade you, actually, they just use BlueSky in a way that inspires brigading." Then this is a problem with the affordances of the platform and needs to be dealt with. 1/3 Elixir of Progress @elucidating.extradimensional.space • 16h l've received several versions tonight of, "Look some posters are just like that. Don't interact if you don't want them to brigade you. They don't even really mean to brigade you, actually, they just use BlueSky in a way that inspires brigading, and they have good reasons to do that." 4 Scoiattolo @scarnecchia.net • 6h We have a bunch of high follower account types with institutional incentives and perhaps personal predilections towards performative cruelty who should absolutely know what they're doing, and then we also have a platform that enables it. 2/3 4 Scoiattolo @scarnecchia.net • 6h We can, and probably should have individual incentives (e.g., suspensions) where it makes sense, but we should also think of how the platform should be designed to be discourage this behavior. 3/3 3

funny historical quirk mainline criticism of LLM-based Al systems was hijacked by someone BIG mad that the rules-based Al premise she'd sunk a whole career into wasn't going to win so instead of having years to really grapple with the consequences of LLMs, crit was tail-chasing on it "not working" Chris Hayes I understand why people are exhausted by Al hype, and why those of us squarely in the corner of "human dignity uber alles" see Al doomerism as self-serving hype, but I *really* think people on the left broadly need to start thinking seriously about the possibiltiy of the hype being...true. 4:34 PM • Feb 11, 2026

• Everybody can replycitizen Platano I like I had a really dim view of academic careerism before all this, but the societal consequences of the Stochastic Parrots sour grapes is some chef's kiss next level shit 2 Citizen Platano i to the extent that Stochastic Parrots was a form of self-soothing for someone losing the paradigm shift game it became itself a MASS self-soothing paradigm for the very challenging questions of identity, purpose, and labor that an LLM demands. but it pays rent poorly bsky.app/profile/adam... Adam Serwer c I confess I do not understand why "the left should prepare for the worst case scenario with Al and jobs" seems to have elicited such a strong negative reaction bsky.app/profile/chri...
