Thanks to everyone who came out to see us on Bike to Work Day! It was fun, biking is great, but our ride home from the pitstops today contained several reminders that Arlington can, and must, do better.

Giant at Penrose Square is great for the car-free shopper: abundant bike racks, a bus stop with 2 different bus lines, and handheld scanners that allow you to put your items directly into your bag (although they seem not to work recently 🫤) susmo.org/giant-penr...

Tied for Most Room For Improvement: Safeway on N Harrison St. To enter from the sidewalk, you have to cross an (unnecessary) driving lane. Did you want to park your bike here? There's room for exactly 1 bike (but plenty of spaces if you drove a car). susmo.org/safeway-ha...

Most Room For Improvement: Harris Teeter at Lee-Harrison. It's an obstacle course to get from the sidewalk to the front entrance, dodging cars in the expansive parking lot. Bike parking is sketchy. If you want to take a bus, the wait might be 30 min. susmo.org/harris-tee...

The very best grocery store to shop at if you're car-free? Trader Joe's in Arlington! Located across the street from a metro entrance, serviced by four bus routes and in the center of the bustling pedestrian area that is Clarendon, TJ's gets an A+ from us. susmo.org/trader-joe...

Despite being located in the heart of Clarendon, Whole Foods is optimized only for cars. For a walker to enter the store, they have to jump over a literal brick wall. The bike racks are an embarrassment. Whole Foods, you could do a lot better than this. susmo.org/whole-food...

The Subterranean Safeway is a favorite in Rosslyn due to its easy street entrance and the recently installed flashing crosswalk light. However, it’s located on a one-way super block which is challenging to navigate and the bike parking is inadequate. susmo.org/safeway-ro...

We love how easy it is to get to Mom's from the Custis trail and the abundant bike parking. Unfortunately, crossing the street to get here is scary. The crosswalk is 100 feet long and doesn’t have a refuge in the middle. susmo.org/mom-s-orga...

Some grocery stores are a joy to experience without a car. Others, not so much. SusMo has created a ranked list of every single grocery store in Arlington according to that criteria. Full rankings will be released Apr 17. Which do you think will top the list as most friendly?

In 2021, we told VDOT that 83% of the safety benefit of their $29 million widening plan for Arlington Blvd could be achieved IMMEDIATELY, with tactical materials. Four years later, Arlington's Vision Zero team has finally convinced them to do it (for one of the 3 intersections)

Tell VDOT that we want serious improvements at the Langston Blvd / N Lynn intersection, where the Mt Vernon trail connects to Rosslyn. It's one of the most dangerous places to ride your bike or walk, and it doesn't have to be that way. publicinput.com/us29...

In 2024, Capital Bikeshare set multiple ridership records. Turns out, if you give people the choice, they’ll choose to ride e-bikes all over town. Let’s make 2025 even safer and even more fun for those who choose to get around this way. givebutter.com/susmo25

At SusMo, we love independent mobility for children… maybe not like this, though! Imagine what this bright 8-year-old might be able to do if there were stores she could take the bus or bike to?

Friday movie recommendation for our car-free nerds: Mary Poppins Returns. Not only does Lin-Manuel Miranda ride a bike with his chimney-sweep ladder attached, he jumps on the back of Mary Poppins' bike for a tandem ride. There's no denying it: people have fun on bikes.

Kids who can get to a park by themselves are 6x more likely to visit than kids who require car transport. Safe streets make this possible.

A critical part of a complete street: bike parking. When there aren’t good options, people get creative.

The only acceptable amount of pedestrian fatalities and injuries is zero. Telling drivers to drive more safely just isn't going to cut it. Better infrastructure, now.

No one likes it when a delivery vehicle parks with their blinkers on in the street while they rush in to grab the food. NYC just took action to encourage couriers to consider using cargo bikes instead. Arlington, let’s make it happen here too.

This bike lane in Rosslyn was just paint on pavement until Arlington added protection. And this year, a traffic calming dip was added, further increasing pedestrian safety. Now, Rosslyn residents are relaxed and confident when they walk through this intersection. #visionzero

Here’s the thing: people’s safety shouldn’t be dependent on drivers’ discretion. A PSA isn’t enough. We need real infrastructure improvements.

Rosslyn pedestrians have been cutting through this parking garage for years to get to their local Safeway. We love that the building owners acknowledged this and took the first step to make it safer by painting this sign.

DC's Metro system has seen a faster recovery than any other similarly sized metro area. Why? They have doubled down on what riders care most about: frequent, reliable trains. Meanwhile, Arlington is pursuing electrifying its bus fleet instead of investing in better service.

When kids lack independent mobility, it predicts greater feelings of loneliness, weaker sense of community, and less frequent social activities with friends. Let’s build kid-friendly transit options in Arlington.
