Help shape Arlington's legislative agenda for next year to break down barriers for safe, sustainable transportation. It only takes a few minutes!
susmo.org
Help Craft Arlington's 2027 Legislative Agenda
Arlington is seeking input on their legislative agenda for next year.  In Virginia where state law largely governs the "rules of the road" and localities retain only the powers explicitly granted to them by the Commonwealth, these legislative agendas are important for defeating many barriers to sustainable mobility.  We think it is important to support bike safety legislation that nearly passed last year (allowing bikes to yield rather than stop at stop signs where there is no conflicting traffic, allowing parents to ride next to their kids, and allowing bikes to follow pedestrian walk signals so they can benefit from leading pedestrian intervals) as well as supporting a move toward the comparative negligence standard rather than Virginia's contributory negligence standard that stacks the deck against vulnerable road users.

Speak up for Better Lit, Better Connected Trails
Arlington is updating its plan for parks and other public spaces, and there are some real opportunities to improve the plan for trails! If you've ever wished that more Arlington trails were safely lit, or that more trail connections were being made in the County, this is a perfect opportunity to reach those decision makers. So speak up today for prioritizing walking, biking and transit access to parks, improving trail connectivity, acquiring land needed to improve trail connections, and adding lighting to more trails!

At long last, the gap in the Arlington Boulevard Trail between Glebe and George Mason Drive may be filled! The draft plan is good, but it could be better. Add your feedback by 6/21! No time like the present!
susmo.org
Filling a Major Gap in the Arlington Boulevard Trail
The potential for the Arlington Boulevard Trail is immense - the vision is for a trail connecting from DC, across the Roosevelt Bridge, stretching the full width of Arlington, and continuing through Seven Corners to Fairfax City. One of the biggest trail gaps in Arlington right now, is from Glebe Road to George Mason Drive.  This project would build an 11' wide trail along the South side of Arlington Boulevard for almost that entire section (for some reason a short stretch of 8' wide sidewalk is currently planned to be retained, and a portion will be built by the Goodwill redevelopment project), as well as providing a proper connection to the existing trail from the pedestrian bridge to Fillmore Street.

Imagine a new trail on George Mason Drive, connecting to the Arlington Boulevard Trail, Columbia Pike Bike Boulevards, W&OD Trail, Four Mile Run Trail, Wakefield High School, and more! Phase 1 is moving forward, but it needs your support! Weigh in today!
susmo.org
Support a Life-Changing Trail on George Mason Drive
One of the highest priorities that came out of Arlington's 2018 Bike Plan update was the need for more north-south connectivity, and George Mason Drive was identified as the best corridor for achieving that connectivity.  Out of that plan came the South George Mason Drive Multimodal Transportation Study, and out of that study came a fantastic project for building a trail along George Mason Drive from Arlington Boulevard to Columbia Pike.  This project is Phase 1 - future projects would continue the trail South along George Mason Drive to the County line! Arlington wants your feedback on the concept plan, and there is organized opposition (because parking, of course), so it's critically important that the County hears your support!  In addition to supporting the project, we have a few substantive comments on making the trail design safer and minimizing conflicts, so check out our suggested feedback below and weigh in now!

The Northern Virginia Transportation Authority (NVTA) controls billions of dollars in transportation funding for Northern Virginia.  It is currently accepting feedback on the 27 projects submitted by the various jurisdictions for some of this money.  Arlington has submitted 13 projects (the most they have ever submitted) - it is unlikely that all will be funded, so it is critical that we support the most important and worthy projects at the NVTA.

Better sidewalks = safer walks to school. Arlington has 4 simple sidewalk gap-fix projects ready to move forward. TODAY (Mon 5/11) is your last chance to weigh in!
susmo.org
Support Four Common Sense Neighborhood Sidewalk Projects
Arlington's Neighborhood Complete Streets program is a data-driven, community-driven approach to improving safety and mobility on Arlington's Neighborhood streets. Four common-sense sidewalk projects are on deck to move forward.  These projects seem so straightforward and basic - largely filling gaps in existing sidewalks, adding a sidewalk where none exist, or circumventing obstructions in existing sidewalks - that it doesn't seem like they merit an engagement process.  Nonetheless, if you have the time it is worth clicking through the online form to express your support for these projects that bring our streets up to the bare minimum pedestrian facility.

Support Needed Refinements to Arlington's Vision Zero Strategy
Arlington's Vision Zero Team is making some much-needed updates to our Vision Zero plan to help us achieve zero deaths and serious injuries on our streets by 2030.  The draft update doubles down on what's been working, and makes needed course corrections to improve efficiencies and focus on areas that need new approaches to succeed. We think the draft plan update deserves your strong support, and encourage you to share that support via the county's feedback form.

🚨🚨DEADLINE: TODAY Thu 12/4🚨🚨 Take 10 minutes for the VDOT STARS study for Langston Boulevard! With FIVE Vision Zero Hotspot intersections, the need for improvements is great!
susmo.org
Sustainable Mobility for Langston Boulevard
VDOT has some draft "safety, operational, transit, and bicycle/pedestrian improvements" along Langston Boulevard between Veitch Street and Key Bridge. Some of the proposed improvements are great and deserve our support and others need to go back to the drawing board. The new raised crosswalks / speed tables are much needed, and separating trail crossings from turning traffic at the Intersection of Doom is a long-overdue safety upgrade.  The improvements at Lynn and the slip lane to Eastbound I-66, however, are inscrutable and counter-productive and the intersection most in need of a raised crosswalk isn't getting one? With FIVE Vision Zero hotspots within the study area, calming traffic and reigning in motor vehicle speeds must be a priority.

🚨🚨Deadline: TODAY (11/14)🚨🚨 Make Doctor's Run Park more than a park, make it a safe, comfortable connection for people walking & biking - whether to school at Randolph ES, or to jobs, restaurants, and shopping at the Pike's great businesses!

Doctor's Run Park: Both Journey and Destination
Doctor's Run is an important park.  It's a community gathering space, picnic area, volleyball venue, playground, and it's also an important transportation connection for those walking, biking, and scooting.  The existing trail through Doctor's Run Park is part of the 12th St S Bicycle Boulevard, providing a safe place for people to bike & scoot parallel to Columbia Pike, and an important route for students at Randolph Elementary.  As the Barcroft Apartments grow and evolve under their new ownership, this connection will only become more important. Speak up for the importance of the trail and path connections through the Park (and make sure the updated playground is great while you're at it). The existing trail is too steep, too windy, too narrow, has several steep drop-offs, and does not connect to 12th Rd S, which is the planned route for the bicycle boulevard extension through Barcroft. The renovation completely fails to connect the updated amenities to the existing trail making access very circuitous for families with strollers or kids on bikes!

Arlington's Transportation Future: Phase 3
The process to rewrite Arlington's Transportation Plan has reached Phase 3; we've moved out of the more esoteric visioning and goals, and into concrete plans for modal networks, curb-space priorities, and policies.  If you've been checked out, now's the time to check in! Don't worry - we've got suggested feedback to get you started!
