Y'all. Ask Jeeves has shut down.

Okay, I've read the press release and the article from The Verge (possible paywall) and supposedly a lot of people won't have to go through this because of some age inference model they're launching to figure out if someone's an adult based on how they use Discord. www.theverge.com/tech/875309/...
Partial screenshot of an article from The Verge about Discord's age verification rollout.

Text: However, some users may not have to go through either form of age verification. Discord is also rolling out an age inference model that analyzes metadata like the types of games a user plays, their activity on Discord, and behavioral signals like signs of working hours or the amount of time they spend on Discord.

“If we have a high confidence that they are an adult, they will not have to go through the other age verification flows,” Badalich says. “A majority of people are not going to see a change in their experience.”

She goes on to explain that the addition of age assurance will mainly impact adult content: “A majority of people on Discord are not necessarily looking at explicit or graphic content. When we say that, we’re really talking about things that are truly adult content [and] age inappropriate for a teen. So, the way that it will work is a majority of people are not going to see a change in their experience."

This has been my very exciting weekend... well, outside of book club, writing things, and a very relaxed Community Day. The data is clean enough to test with my own shinies, and a lot of that time has been spent cursing the SwSh and SV dexes since they have separate DLC dexes and dupes to clean up.
A spreadsheet showing a list of the first few Kanto Pokemon, filtered by the ones that have had a Pokemon Go Community Day. The other columns show whether a copy of that shiny exists in other mainline games: Sword/Shield, Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee, Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl, Legends Arceus, and Scarlet/Violet, with values of TRUE (shown in green), FALSE (in yellow), or NOT IN GAME.

The #nanowrimo statement has been updated with a different non-apology, with no hint of being edited. Left: the original statement pulled this morning from nanoscandal.com Right: the statement on nanowrimo.org/a-note-to-ou... as of a few minutes ago
A diffchecker showing two different NaNoWriMo statements, with changes highlighted.

Edited paragraphs: We apologize that our original message was unclear and seemingly random. Our note on ableism and classism was rooted in the desire to point out that, for people in certain circumstances, some forms of AI can be life-changing. We certainly don’t believe those with concerns about AI to be classist or ableist. Not being more careful about our wording was a bad decision on our part.

Our Mission is about providing encouragement to writers and cheering them on as they progress toward their goals. That remains our primary focus. In the future, we will be more transparent about the issues that we are trying to address with any messaging we provide.

Look ma, the Twitter version of this post made the NYT! And apparently Freewrite's removal was in error? Veeeery interesting. www.nytimes.com/2024/09/06/s... (possible paywall)
Adam Leeb, the chief executive of Astrohaus, the company that makes the writing tool Freewrite, another NaNoWriMo sponsor, said that he had issues with some of the language the organization had used in its statement but that the company wasn’t ready to end its support just yet.

Some authors have said they have used A.I. for inspiration, or to explore the possibilities of form. The novelist Sheila Heti, known for her literary experiments, used a customizable chatbot to write a short story that was published in The New Yorker last year.

“Historically, anytime that people or organizations have tried to resist the march of technology, they’ve failed,” Mr. Leeb said in an interview.

“While we don’t have any generative A.I. in our products, we don’t necessarily look down on people who are using it,” he added.

Eagle-eyed users on X noted that Freewrite’s logo had been removed from the NaNoWriMo website this week. Leeb said that was an error and that his team had not requested the change.

To the NaNoWriMo Community:

In early August, debates about AI on our social media channels became vitriolic. It was clear that the intimidation and harassment we witnessed were causing harm within our community of writers. The FAQs we crafted last week were written to curtail those behaviors. We wanted to send a clear signal that NaNoWriMo spaces would not be used to bully or delegitimize other writers. This was consistent with our May 2024 statement, which named a lack of civility in NaNoWriMo spaces as a longstanding concern.

Taking a position of neutrality was not an abandonment of writers’ legitimate concerns about AI. It was an acknowledgment that NaNoWriMo can’t maintain a civil, inclusive community if we allow selective intolerance. We absolutely believe that AI must be discussed and that its ethical use must be advocated-for.

It's on the Washington Post as well, with what may be the first statement from ProWritingAid. Even they think NaNoWriMo's take is bad. www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2... (possible paywall)
Excerpt from Washington Post article on NaNo AI controversy. Text: ProWritingAid’s founder, Chris Banks, confirmed to The Washington Post on Wednesday that the company has long supported NaNoWriMo. He said his organization was “committed to supporting human creativity, not undermining it.”

“We fundamentally disagree with the sentiment that criticism of AI tools is inherently ableist or classist. We believe that writers’ concerns about the role of AI are valid and deserve thoughtful consideration,” Banks wrote in an email.

NaNoWriMo did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Post.

Sushi @sushimustwrite.bsky.social · 02/09/2024
Update: #nanowrimo edited the AI FAQ to include a hand-wavey paragraph while continuing to throw disabled writers under the bus for social justice points.
Added text:

Note: we have edited this post by adding this paragraph to reflect our acknowledgment that there are bad actors in the AI space who are doing harm to writers and who are acting unethically. We want to make clear that, though we find the categorical condemnation for AI to be problematic for the reasons stated below, we are troubled by situational abuse of AI, and that certain situational abuses clearly conflict with our values. We also want to make clear that AI is a large umbrella technology and that the size and complexity of that category (which includes both non-generative and generative AI, among other uses) contributes to our belief that it is simply too big to categorically endorse or not endorse.

Wake up, new NaNoWriMo board update dropped forums.nanowrimo.org/t/message-fr... So about valuing our input...
Subject: Message from NaNoWriMo Board of Directors: February-March 2024 Update to the Community

Summary:
1. "Deepest gratitude" to people sticking with NaNo
Rose Brock and Cari Borja have finished their terms on the board, Josie Brown and Karolynn St-Pierre have joined.
2. We will be continuing our focus on the core goals and mission of NaNoWriMo.org: efforts to sustain and grow programs, and support writers at all stages and ages that wish to participate
3. We will be preparing the necessary components to conduct a recruitment of the next, permanent Executive DirectorSummary:
As mentioned above, we will continue to support Kilby and the team at HQ that have worked tirelessly in steering all resources to ensure the longevity of the foundational programs NaNoWriMo created and support for the community and volunteers/Municipal Liaisons (MLs):

4a. We support the changes required for a safe community space in the Forums for all ages
4b. Identity verification, background checks, certification of educators, ML training etc.

Updates on operations will be coming from HQ, and the Board will keep the community abreast of anything majorly impactful from our purview when they arise.

We hope everyone that has embraced NaNoWriMo in their hearts as we have, will also embrace the positive direction we feel the organization is heading towards, continue reaching out with feedback / great ideas and suggestions, and continue advocating for your fellow writers in the community. We see you, we hear you, and value your input.

One of the NaNoWriMo FAQs on org changes says they've had scores of conversations, emails, and messages with community members on other media. They've sent surveys (note the plural). Have YOU heard from NaNo HQ for your thoughts? Because I sure haven't. nanowrimo.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/art...
Why are you making so many changes without engaging the community?

First and foremost, not all of our community engagement has been visible. We've had scores of conversations, email interactions, and volleyed messages with community members using other media. We've trawled forum threads at length and taken down suggestions. We've sent surveys and reviewed the data. We've received suggestions forwarded by the Board. Even though we have yet to hold anything like a town hall meeting, a tremendous amount of feedback has been received and taken into account.

NaNoWriMo update: the board has posted an update and future monthly updates will be via email only and (it sounds like) not the forums. Existing forum threads are closed. Let's see if they remember to close the regional forums. (Sorry for incomplete alt text!)
To Our NaNoWriMo Community,

We’re reaching out to communicate our current thinking about resource planning moving forward. Feedback from our global community point to numerous issues we need to address:

Implementing moderation and community management practices that rise to the needs of both youth and adult community members
Putting controls in place to further a culture of belonging, with special priority around improving the experiences of those from historically marginalized groups
Making programs and resources more accessible to all members of our community, regardless of ability
Doing more to include and to serve our community members outside the U.S.; shifting our culture and operations to function as a truly global organization
Taking a critical look at current programs and technical infrastructure in ways that better-serve authors
Ensuring that our core offerings and any course-corrections we make are in service of our mission (cont)We want folks to know that we’ve hired a consultant as an on-the-ground resource who will serve the organization over the next several months. The forums will remain closed until the aforementioned assessment is complete and until a path forward is decided upon.

Unfortunately, in recent days, the questions we’ve received via the forums have become increasingly granular. We’ve done our best to convey that there’s a tremendous amount that has yet to be decided and discussed. We’re reaching the conclusion that there’s not much more real information we can give folks at this point. We are also recognizing that our time is better spent deliberating on the issues at hand rather than being hyper-responsive. Monitoring our inboxes and forum questions has become a full-time job.

As a result, our plan is to close all current Board forum threads as well. We will respond to questions that have already been posted as time allows us. Folks can email us with questions at nanowrimoboard@gmail.com
