Bold speech by #Burnham. An actual change to the triple lock from 2030 to fund a new national care service and has gone further towards renationalising water than he has in the past

He is going for it on the utilities - lots of avenues for the opposition to attack but he is saying what voters want to hear. Question is whether he can do it. #Burnham

Lot of talk about a farmer reporting the Fairford vans. Given levels of #ruralcrime from houses to livestock not surprising something suspicious was reported.

My guess is they will use the savings available from doing something to the triple lock to fund a national care service. Makes sense and needs to be wait for a Manifesto for next election otherwise he would be breaching the current one

One thing which #Wargame does ram home is that membership of the EU is critical to our defence

#Wargame is good but if I was #Sky I might have sacrificed the ad breaks to make it more ‘event tv’ - otherwise immediately becomes ‘fiction’ and you mentally switch off.

I forsee some serious issues with the new #statepension becoming subject to tax. Many of these pensioners will have never done a tax return in their life or dealt with HMRC. Recipe for disaster!

Plenty of climate scientists think that 1.8C is already for the birds and it will come at us faster. I’m not qualified to know which is more likely to be true. Either is bad. bsky.app/profile/prof...

Interesting debate around taxing the state pension. In US social security is a separate line item on return and discounted for tax purposes. Only remaining earned income is considered. In U.K. a ‘commitment’ exists that state pension won’t be taxed but no practical proposal of how to guarantee that.

As someone who lives in the countryside this is concerning - it’s a major reason older folk don’t feel safe driving in the dark and feel trapped in their homes as a result. It should be recorded. ‘Dazzling headlights’ no longer recorded as factor in road crashes - The Times and The Sunday Times

A 2,000 foot chunk of glacier snapped off and dropped 4,000 feet in Nepal. The flash flood killed 98 people. 391 tourists are missing. 47 Americans unaccounted for. 19 bridges gone. This isn't a natural disaster. This is climate breakdown.

Challenge for the government is that it needs to build - infrastructure, houses, prisons, data centres etc BUT where it or private sector partners want to build ie countryside, greenfield etc should be protected to ensure climate change adaptation and is therefore precisely where it should not
