The MSNBC commentator saying that most political violence has historically come from the left just once again showed how we suffer from failing to learn history. Lynching, pogroms, race riots, the political violence that ended Reconstruction, and against the Civil Rights Movement. Come on.

even when I'm cognitively like "huh I don't agree with that opinion" (with some exceptions, like I'm not really comparing myself against magas standards or something), there is still the voice in my head thats like "but consider... maybe you think that because you are actually evil and dumb?"

like the clickbaity youtube titles and the grand moral pronouncements and nature of the it just being where everyone vents their most petty pet peeves does this thing where I'm constantly checking myself against millions of peoples standards

Breaking news: A federal judge is giving Florida 60 days to clear out the immigrant detention facility called Alligator Alcatraz. The ruling forbids state officials from moving any other migrants there.

Florida ordered to dismantle Alligator Alcatraz over environmental impact
The ruling, which gives the state 60 days to act, comes as Gov. Ron DeSantis plans to convert a prison in North Florida into a second immigrant detention site.

its such a baffling interpretation like do they also listen to their friends telling the stories about their lives and think they're being forced to identify with them i do not understand

Reading Blackouts right now. Absolutely brilliant book. Would lose much of it's intended effect and resonance in third person.

Don't need to read Oliver Twist in first person, but Lolita absolutely needed to be written that way.

Turner @suribachis.bsky.social · 09/08/2025
just don't understand the debate at all. I feel like you match the POV to the needs of the story being told, not create a dictum on which is the "right" one for all story telling.

Turner @suribachis.bsky.social · 09/08/2025
The complaint usually seems to be "I have read books written in first person that were poorly written" and like. well yeah. could say the same for any POV

Turner @suribachis.bsky.social · 09/08/2025
Also recurrent opinion that first person is somehow juvenile, YA adjacent, or *new*. Think you'd have to have read maybe 4 books to think this. So of the most highly praised classics of all time were written in first person.

Turner @suribachis.bsky.social · 09/08/2025
of a book is not you? You are their audience. The person they are telling a story to, just the same as in third person.

Turner @suribachis.bsky.social · 09/08/2025
weirdly common opinion on first person narration ive encounter and I am so baffled by it. also saw people saying "young people only read first person because they're narcissistic and have to project onto the protagonist." Fundamentally do not understand this opinion. The first person narrator

Are Americans aware that down here in Mexico we’ve been getting bombarded for months with ads of Kristi Noem telling us to our face that we’re out welcome in the US, and that these ads even found their way into our national TV broadcasts Because I feel like I have seen nobody mention it

Freedom to cause offense without being jailed or sued is a thing. Freedom to cause offense without being criticized, shunned, and despised is not. The very concept is incoherent.

There is a direct line between the impunity with which Trump and MAGA politicians tell lies about immigrants’ supposed criminality and the way these establishment Democrats feel complete license to smear a Muslim politician with false allegations and insinuations about antisemitism

First, Israel cut Gaza’s last internet cable—blacking out 2.3 million people. Then it bombed Iran with no UN approval, no imminent threat. As eyes shift to Iran, Israel will escalate its ethnic cleansing in Gaza—and create more regional instability.

the best thing you can do right now to avoid sinking into despair is stop waiting for a government to protect people it was never designed to protect. redistribute your time and resources to build new structures of resilience. stop begging for mercy and plant the seeds that are already in your hand.
