So when politicians yell “Canada is taking advantage of us,” they’re leaving out the part where Americans choose to buy Canadian oil because it’s cheaper, safer, and from a friendly country. The economic relationship is basically balanced.

The only reason the U.S. shows a “trade deficit” with Canada is energy. If you remove oil and gas, the U.S. actually runs a trade surplus with Canada — especially in manufacturing and services.
