David Mayerich @supox.net · 24/09/2026I argue this point a lot! I don’t think it’s hard for an honest person to figure out what’s true. I think the practical problem is we’ve insulated ourselves from consequences. It’s not that dangerous to believe silly stuff. One person skipping an MMR shot is still protected by everyone else. 000
David Mayerich @supox.net · 24/09/2026I often wonder how much of the modern anti-vax movement rests on a fear of needles. Funny thing is if that were true it would make me way more sympathetic. It sucks getting poked! At least it would be real and maybe we could do something about it… 000
David Mayerich @supox.net · 15/09/2026This reads to me like: “We alone are immune to the poison that is killing us, specifically.” 010
David Mayerich @supox.net · 12/09/2026I just started playing this and I really needed a good game. 010
David Mayerich @supox.net · 09/09/2026I’m curious what’ll happen with it. The way I use social media has changed dramatically, and I wonder if it has for others. Reddit and Bluesky are the only places I’d even consider reading a comment. Left Facebook a while ago (was an early college adopter) and haven’t looked back *at all*. 101
David Mayerich @supox.net · 03/09/2026I didn’t know anything about the people involved, but actually tried Omarchy on a whim last week. I didn’t make it three days. It felt like peeling away layers of an onion. Ultimately wiped it for vanilla CachyOS and built up from there. 020
David Mayerich @supox.net · 03/09/2026I asked Claude to draw some ASCII art of Yuna from Final Fantasy 10. Hands down the funniest thing I’ve ever seen from an LLM. 050
David Mayerich @supox.net · 14/08/2026When social media was new I thought the background noise was kinda neat. Silly people would be silly but it was new and kinda funny. Now it’s just incessant slop I’ve seen a million times before. It’s become obvious that every edgy weirdo is just…the same guy. Over and over again. 010
David Mayerich @supox.net · 12/08/2026I spent years trying to fix a problem with an RX 6900 on a homebuilt system - what appeared to be random (but repeatable) shutdowns. Switching to Linux helped a lot, but it still happened occasionally. Found LACT a few months ago and was able to track it down and completely eliminate it. 010
David Mayerich @supox.net · 18/07/2026Mine are the Vampire: The Masquerade video games. Similar setting. I’m planning to pick the new one up despite bad reviews. I love the genre but it almost feels cursed. 000
David Mayerich @supox.net · 08/07/2026Never could beat that endgame as a kid. There was some trick to stabbing him with the boat but I could never get the timing right. 010
David Mayerich @supox.net · 06/07/2026I’ve basically made peace with that never happening. That “unread” number is as inevitable as time itself. It’ll keep getting larger until I die. 010
David Mayerich @supox.net · 05/07/2026I recommend his C and OpenGL tutorials to my students. Really good stuff. 000
David Mayerich @supox.net · 30/06/2026I remember learning this as a grad student at SIGGRAPH. A game developer (don’t remember who) said something like: “Look ideas are easy. I came up with the idea for The Sims. We all came up with the idea for Sims. A few invested time and money. One team did it right.” 010
David Mayerich @supox.net · 30/06/2026Ah here it is. Maybe in person it’s more obvious he’s doing a bit? I guess prefer media that’s entirely real or not real. There seems to be this huge internet audience that enjoys “pretending” things are real. It’s like the Marvel “What If…” series but with actual people’s lives. 000
David Mayerich @supox.net · 30/06/2026I don’t buy into Dead Internet theory YET but the dynamics are certainly different. I saw a video of some YouTube guy talking to a kid about the Salem Witch Trials: he thought they went too far and now we’ll never know if the women were guilty. I’ll bet that would have made bank online. 100
David Mayerich @supox.net · 28/06/2026Just watched the new one and thought it was decent. The kids loved it. Anything I would have changed (following the comic a bit more and turning up the True Grit vibes) would have probably taken away from their experience, though. 000
David Mayerich @supox.net · 09/06/2026Thank you thank you thank you! Now I just need one for mainstream science articles. 😅 010
David Mayerich @supox.net · 09/06/2026Is there any actual legitimate reason this isn’t routinely done for legal and academic sources? I’m so tired of “The article, which was recently published in the scientific journal Nature…” like wtf is a DOI too much to ask for? 110
David Mayerich @supox.net · 02/06/2026Yea there were a couple of times I felt like I wanted to turn it off and come back later. I also expected some sort of conclusion to the entire arc. I thought they were making a movie to wrap up the series. 000

David Mayerich @supox.net · 03/05/2026No but I feel like I could mentally reconstruct the episode purely from late 80s culture. 030
David Mayerich @supox.net · 01/05/2026I often think about how much fun people could have if Star Wars were in the public domain by now. 010
David Mayerich @supox.net · 29/04/2026My daughter just asked for a Nintendo, and I’ve become so dissolutioned with cell phones I had to actually TRY to not look excited. 000
David Mayerich @supox.net · 28/04/2026The thing about liars is that getting you to believe them is only one goal. Their second is to waste time and mental bandwidth. In cases like this I figure it’s best to pretend they’re emitting white noise. 000
David Mayerich @supox.net · 25/04/2026I think Vi Hart still makes this point better than anything I’ve seen👇vimeo.comPi is (still) WrongPlease excuse the simple math and spelling errors. You shouldn't believe anything I say without double-checking even at the best of times. Go here: http://tauday.com/ and here: http://www.math.utah.e... 000
David Mayerich @supox.net · 23/04/2026Quick question: what’s the bottleneck for federal cases? I feel like getting a final answer takes forever. Is that because the bandwidth is limited? Do the plaintiffs/defendants eat up the time? Basically, could we get more efficient by, say, doubling the number of judges? 240
David Mayerich @supox.net · 22/04/2026Utah family trip is one of my 2-year goals. I was in SLC once for a conference and loved it. I remember looking out the airplane window and being surprised at how much it looked like the Borean Tundra. 000
David Mayerich @supox.net · 19/04/2026I get what @rocketplane.bsky.social is saying but one could argue lots of things: you could argue it’s all electromagnetic fields passing around virtual photons. I’m just saying these are the steps I’d take to explain it to a layperson. 100
David Mayerich @supox.net · 19/04/2026That’s actually my favorite correction published by the New York Times! 000
David Mayerich @supox.net · 18/04/2026Exactly - the next logical question is “okay so what forces the air down?” So then you describe that the wing is shaped in a way that it pushes more air down than up. If there are more questions then maybe get into Bernoulli (which used to be my starting point). 110
David Mayerich @supox.net · 18/04/2026Yea I also think understanding the laws of thermodynamics would get people through most pseudoscience conspiracy theories. 020
David Mayerich @supox.net · 18/04/2026Yea although this is even more basic. I think most people know the words “conservation of momentum” but I’d bet most people can’t actually define “momentum”. Everyone knows if they blow on something it moves away. 110
David Mayerich @supox.net · 18/04/2026I mean you have to start somewhere, and different people want different depths to the answer. I used to start with “more pressure below than above”. I think saying the air is pushed down is more intuitive for non-scientists. Nobody ever asks me how a rocket works: they get it. 100
David Mayerich @supox.net · 18/04/2026“Air Go Down, Plane Go Up” will now be my first-order explanation. It’s a MUCH better starting point than trying to explain pressure. 512912
David Mayerich @supox.net · 18/04/2026Ex: Family just got back from London and I’m interested in showing the kids related history content. Not my area, and there’s a lot of pseudo-history BS. If, say, Hank Green interviewed a creator on the topic I’d jump on that. Granted, it wouldn’t occur to me to actually ask him to… 010
David Mayerich @supox.net · 18/04/2026I think the systematic problem is assessing reliability. I understand asking a generalist I already trust “is this legit?” Even for an expert I one field, it’s a lot of work to verify content from others. “What does Hank think” just seems like a way to set priors. 110
David Mayerich @supox.net · 17/04/2026“I’ve created an algorithm to reconstruct all of your biopsy slides from a single blood sample using generative AI!” 000
David Mayerich @supox.net · 15/04/2026This is even an issue in science, where you’d think we’d have more control over naming conventions. I can go on and on about how it should be “electron nanoscopy”. Big Bang is also misleading. Plus I’m one of those people adamant that pi should actually be 2*pi… 110
David Mayerich @supox.net · 15/04/2026Yea I was just thinking that: “damaging to question it” is bizarre phrasing. Every time a committee is reviewing clinical trials for a vaccine they’re “questioning it”. 000
Reposted by David MayerichKen Jennings @kenjennings.bsky.social · 12/04/2026I just found out my kid thought Star Trek IV was a period piece, like the episodes where they go back to the Depression or Mark Twain or whatever. 932269112
David Mayerich @supox.net · 11/04/2026I picked up the first game when I heard there was an “uncensored” version in the US (it has a REALLY silly sex-based card-collection mechanic). I remember being absolutely blown away by the world and thinking they were on to something special. Really glad they made a (much better IMO) sequel. 000
David Mayerich @supox.net · 11/04/2026Feels like there’s some impressive privilege baked into the idea that Making Money isn’t “manly enough” 010
David Mayerich @supox.net · 11/04/2026I switched to LibreWolf because it’s easier to start from “everything is locked down” and work backwards. I got so sick of installing Firefox and immediately get reminded to “turn off ads, don’t remember passwords, don’t share my location, don’t allow notifications…” 🤪 020
David Mayerich @supox.net · 10/04/2026Yep! I feel like Jenova COULD have been better but was maybe under-utilized? I think the concept is more interesting than Kefka or Lavos, but falls short of both… 010
