Mom’s birthday was a success! Even though I planned & ordered everything, still ran into so many glitches but it all worked out in the end. 😮‍💨 She was surprised by her cousin coming w/ his family & was happy to see them. 🥰 I could see how it was a little overwhelming & overstimulating for her though.

Mom specifically requested a Blueberry Birthday Cake, so I delivered! It was very good and light!

Been so stressed the last two weeks trying to fix/deal with something for my Mom. Lots of late nights doing paperwork, emails & letters. But treated myself to Taiwanese fried chicken after Midnight, plus an oat milk salted caramel iced latté (which is why I am still up 😳).

Went to my fave Market in the boonies yesterday & bought so much fresh produce (Swiss chard/green onions/mixed greens/yellow beans/sweet potatoes/cantaloupe/nectarines), olive sourdough bread, pumpkin cake & sausages. Bought a posy 💐 & had a yummy oat milk flat white. You can feel Fall in the air!

I’m feeling a bit sad about the Snowbirds being grounded for the next five years at least, while they wait for their new planes. But they went out with a bang and also did some very cool flyovers today as a “see you later” (will share these in some reposts of others’ videos).

Did our annual Air Show picnic w/ Mom on Labour Day. It was actually pretty stressful but 1) Mom ate everything I made 🙌🏻 (ploughman’s lunch + blueberry raspberry coconut cake), 2) the ice cream truck showed up 🍦 & 3) Mom loved seeing the Snowbirds again. ✈️ I ❤️ this shot Roman took of Mom & I!

Played a new game (to me) called Slingz and it was a lot of fun! I love playing games & want to do that regularly again over the Fall & Winter.

Had such a great day in NOTL yesterday: Peach Fest (bought donut & white peaches + golden plums), my fave Pie Plate for a flat white & scone, bought a straw cloche @ 50% off & visited our friends’ winery tasting some wonderful Pinot Blanc, Gamay & Merlot w/ homemade focaccia. Saw a coyote pup in AM.

It’s my Mom’s neighbours’ 50th Wedding Anniversary! Wanted to get them gold (for 50! 😉) éclairs but Delysées doesn’t make them anymore. So went w/ a fave Ukrainian bakery & their mousse cakes shaped like fruit. There are three in-laws visiting from the UK, which is why I bought five. Hope they like!

1st Date Anniversary Dinner @ Eloise (wanted somewhere walkable in my neighbourhood) & some highlights were the honey brioche w/ salted butter, a Caesar Salad covered in a ridiculous snowfall of parmesan & an amazing Citrus Parfait which surprised me with its meringue (still creamy) & jelly bits.

Forgot to post my haul from attending Ontario’s Best Butter Tart Fest in Midland this past weekend. Saw The Fire Guys, had a great jerk chicken sandwich from Soo Irie, visited the newish @woodfolkcider.bsky.social & did flights and picked up Ciao Roma pizza by the weight. It was a good day.

My haul from Saturday up in Midland to attend Ontario’s Best Butter Tart Fest: $1 books from the library book sale - Mr. Wilkinson’s Vegetables and Home Brew Beer, bottles of Windy Ridge, Copper Moon and Crimson Reserve Ciders from Woodfolk Cider, 6 pack of plain and 6 pack of raisin butter tarts from Doo Doo’s, a can of The County Bounty’s Raspberry & Lime soda (I bought a 6 pack), Sheena’s Toffee Scottish Shortbread, Yorkshire Tea’s Caramelized Biscuit Brew (a fave), Jaffa Cakes and 8 pack of Moetarts plain, raisin, pecan and Skor butter tarts. (Not shown: Sweet Oasis’ raspberry coconut butter tart and double chocolate butter tart because they were eaten and a dozen farm fresh eggs from the side of the road.)

Replaced the water heater today (helps when your BF’s son’s a plumber 🙌🏻) but no luck finding a replacement heating element. Tried another Ukrainian bakery, Asters Patisserie & it’s very good! Look at the Mandarin Cake & the Chocolate Cherry is Ukraine’s flag. 🇺🇦 Really liked my Orange Espresso Tonic.

I am loving Samin Nosrat’s latest cookbook, Good Things. Made her Chivi Spice Chicken Thighs (but subbed roasted red peppers for the chipotle peppers because it was what I had on hand) with Arroz Verde and it was *so delicious*. Lots of leftovers too. 😋

I believe @berniemichalik.ca recommended this book and it is fantastic. KC Davis’ How To Keep House While Drowning really has some epiphanies that have blown my mind when it comes to my thinking (and inner judging) around cleaning & keeping a home. I am determined to have a different mindset.

Really enjoy @kitchenbee.bsky.social books & currently reading The Heart-Shaped Tin. Her chapter on her Mom’s toast rack (did your Mom ever have one?) & dementia really hit home. My Mom has always been a bit of a hoarder & now especially is holding tight to her possessions. Some, I don’t understand.

It’s my Mom & Dad’s Wedding Anniversary. 💞 They honeymooned in Niagara Falls but TIL they drove a VW Sedan/Buggy as newlyweds! I always knew we had a VW Station Wagon when I was a kid but I didn’t know about the Buggy! Looks like it was just as cold then in May, as it is today.

I have a Happy Hour friend who I try to catch up with every couple of months. This evening we tried The Frederick & it was very good. The Happy Hour portions were surprisingly huge & I liked their Espresso Martini. They kept the Burger from The Harbord Room & it is a fave.

Saw my California friend for the first time in 7 years (when she was in Canada for her Grandpa’s 100th birthday & now he’s turning 107!!). She had to fly to Toronto to connect to Winnipeg so made it an overnighter. We caught up at a pizzeria where I ordered a calzone & it came out like this! Huge!

I am enjoying cooking mostly Asian food over the last little while. I’ve made the Fried Omelet Soup with Pork Meatballs (stock from scratch) and Homestyle Steamed Pork Hash with Eggs from House of Nanking cookbook (both yum!). Been deep frying prawn crackers using the brand from my childhood.

Yesterday was fun dealing w/ a sump pump that stopped working but I must be getting used to all these Mom-related curveballs because I just got it done (thank God for Roman). Our reward was a baby Paska from Nova & a Berry Cheesecake Croissant @ Le Beau. My Black Sesame Latté was so smooth & creamy!

Went to the cutest Ukrainian café called Коло where I drank a delicious Salted Caramel Latté & shared the Cottage Cheese Apricot Jam Crêpes. My wish is to go to Lviv one day to experience their coffee culture. Hard to believe Russia began its invasion of Ukraine four years ago - I do not forget.

Back to Le Beau where Sam’s Iced Vanilla Cloud Latté was delicious & which I drank despite the snow. 🤪 The Pistachio Lime Yuzu Croissant is my favourite of their croissant flavours now.

I found a car in my favourite colour, Plum Crazy (a 1969 Dodge Challenger RT), a beautiful 1965 Corvette (look at the lines courtesy of John DeLorean) & a 1960 Impala with great fins and taillights.

Mom’s own car came later, a red Duster. I guess they got rid of the VW & bought a Plymouth Reliant (blue) & Duster in the last year those models were made. I don’t think those cars lasted long.

Had a fun time at Motorama on the weekend. A trip down memory lane with some cars, like this 1966 Bahama Blue VW 1300 Sedan. We only had one car when I was a kid, a VW Type 3 Station Wagon. We’d go camping at Algonquin Park with my tent on top of the roof where I’d play paper dolls before bed.
