Mel liked kissing Jayce. Really liked kissing Jayce. Whether the act of affection was a chaste peck or one less so, it mattered not. To feel his lips move against hers, their bodies pressing close enough together for her hands to trace the length of dense muscles lining up and down his back, studying them twitch underneath her— the enticement sent her nerves alight as the effervescence in a champagne glass.

Both excitement and fright in an evenly matched tug-of-war.

Then there were the affections she received from him as well. To feel such cherishment and adoration without it feeling like work—

She'd only see it in the way of her mother and father to an extent but she herself hadn't known firsthand as much in a long time, disillusioned by certain realities that unfolded before her.

Chapter 11

Jayce's movements in the moment were small and deft, built from years of well-practiced concentration, precision, and restraint in his craft.
Almost inconspicuous they were from where Mel stood, but not enough to skip past her attention. She could tell he was working on something fine. Her attentiveness has served her well over her years in a multitude of situations, though as of recent she's decided moments like this pale in comparison to the rest.

Quick on the defense, he pulled his tongue back, blurting a quick 'no!'

Then one more softer.

Then again with weight behind it.

"It's… refreshing," he found himself admitting. "Raw and… and unfiltered."

It was meant as a compliment, so to be met with silence and a wistful color over Mel's gaze befuddled him. He didn't mean anything by it; for her to take offense, but this was not the first time he's been caught with his foot in his mouth. As compromise he proposed to postpone, move their meeting to another day, if she was still getting settled or jetlagged—

Denied.

His distraction, appreciated.

Okay, cautiously easing his guard.

If anything, he could do that for her.

"I didn't wish to spook you." She rose to her feet properly as her eyes caught Jayce's form all over. He'd been in long sweatpants, a faded light gray and a ribbed tank top. The tank top was probably an undershirt given the presence of another shirt balled up haphazardly but a pace away from his feet.

i always love when a character’s attraction is indicated by them just describing someone in slightly too much detail. they’ve noticed them just a little too much, even if they don’t describe them as especially beautiful. we the reader can feel them looking too closely
