A lot of my ideas around hypnosis center around an idea of selfhood which I call the Agent-Ego model. Essentially, Sartre distinguishes the thing that DOES the experiencing, desiring, thinking, etc, from the resulting self concept. Think of it like the classic Cogito Ego Sum- (🧵1/8)

One thing I feel is relevant here is Sartre’s idea our ability to perceive fragility comes from our ability to perceive an object as having the potential to be reduced to nothingness. Especially fragile things are almost haunted by this potential, surrounding it on all sides, and contextualizing what it is and what one can do with it.

We recognize an object as fragile because it has within itself the potential to be reduced to nothingness. This fragility can be “in the bones” of an object, such as a delicate vase, or it can be the result of circumstance, such as a plant becoming brittle due to lack of water.

We can leverage this in an Ego death scene: the recognition that one’s self CAN be “reduced to nothing” treated like a seed of what is to come. We can build anticipation of this, treat this like an inevitability, haunting the subject of the scene even as it draws in closer.

This fragility can both an associated quality, and an object of consideration in itself. This means we can manipulate how the Agent imposes it onto the Ego (e.g., one’s selfhood can be made more fragile), and imbue that fragility with associated qualities (e.g., exciting, scary, arousing).

Since realizing that we perceive nothingness all the time, I’ve found it way easier to focus on it as an object inside of my own mind. It’s become much easier to perceive nothingness where a memory should be, or nothingness where my thoughts usually are as a result of this.

Additionally, since nothingness can have associated qualities, we can play with and toy with what qualities we want to give nothingness. We typically do this in hypnosis with statements like “a pleasant nothingness”, “a relaxing nothingness” etc., but there’s no reason we can’t get more creative with it.

For example

Realizing that filling your head with nothingness is easy because you fill the world with nothingness all the time.

•“Your resistance is not-there, instead, there’s just nothing where your will to fight back should be. Like looking for the key needed to unlock a door and realizing it isn’t there. You notice that there’s nothing where the means of escape should be. Just empty air where the the key should be.”

•“You can notice how there’s nothing standing between you and a nice deep trance, just like how you can notice that there’s nothing to stop my words from sliding into your head. There’s nothing to stop you from following what you want to give in to. And when there’s nothing to stop you, you know where gravity takes you…”

Creative qualities to assign to nothingness:
“You feel more and more of your mind being swallowed by an expanding nothingness”

•“You feel a nice, safe nothingness where your memories of being a person used to be”

•“As the mad scientist turns you into a beast, you feel your moral restraint being pulled out of you, replaced with a cold nothingness in your heart towards your friends.”
