#sfmt2026 102. Forgotten Island Dreamworks did it all: amazing visuals, humorous hijinks, moving emotional character arc, a funny doggy, AND it's filipino in both the mundane and fantastical, this movie is extremely up my alley?? I loved it a Lot Dreamworks kiinda killing it lately

#sfmt2026 101. The Cat Returns A delight for the eyes for cat lovers, and especially in the dapper gentleman that helps out the protag, but the story doesn't do much for me otherwise. Hilarious that the protag's main takeaway seems to be "I am human, but god that cat was handsome"

#sfmt2026 99. Fire Emblem Thracia 776 a fire emblem game for SICKOS BUT for real this one's so cool for what it does with item economy and creating new goals in your strategy just from seeing a neat weapon you might need on an enemy, and goddamn this game throws you into an arrangement of Situations
Music is somehow a weak point generally for me, at least the map music, it's neat that it changes if a unit dies but since I'm stubborn and didn't let that happen I almost never got to enjoy more serious tones while strategizing.
Music's great in the story segments tho, and while the translation patch I played is a great translation patch, I didn't get much out of the overall story or setting by the end, but the individual story bits that would play out for like Maretta for example were pretty dang good. A better story than average for Fire Emblem tbh, but not standout or anything. But the early chapters are much better, with the main characters on the back foot constantly, and with no gold coming in like it does for other fire emblem games, you're forced to fight for every piece of gear you can get, it's the best part of the game. That said, the latter half is pretty good too, with more of an emphasis on using the absurdly good staff utility of the game, and Actually Having Access to Usable Siege Tomes, to go the extra mile and get the tantalizing good stuff from chests, enemy inventories, etc...they don't make 'em like this anymore (not to say that like, Fates or Engage have bad gameplay because they have amazing gameplay, but then I look at Awakening and Three Houses, and guh...).
With this done I've pretty much done at least one playthrough of every fire emblem game that I care to do! Which is, afaik, everything but the remakes of 1 and 3 and FE 1, 2, and 3.

#sfmt2026 94. The Amazing Digital Circus Life changing if you're 15 and an earnest reminder to be kind and treat each other as humans for everyone. Can't deny it's got a ton of heart and soul, but a lil annoying with how quickly it snaps to characters bearing their soul to each other
Which is to say this doesn't end up as a coffee shop cozy fanfic where nothing bad happens and people are nice to each other all the time because Jax and Caine don't treat others as real people but everyone else ends up in that kinda zone. Which would make this a much lesser series if Jax and Caine didn't also have their good character moments and development, and they do! So heck yeah! Caine is like, half comic relief, half demented ring master, which is a classic tbh, and is absolutely well paced with the turn to getting redeemed (and WOW they did it without the characters blabbing, genuinely great stuff) and also the They Got Guns episode and finale did so much to turn Jax from the infuriatingly abrasive character (and to the show's credit, I wasn't so out of it where I relished the characters getting upset at Jax, I was with them) to an understandable character. Not relatable because I'm not anywhere in the same ballpark of insecure and defensive, but it's a remarkably realistic exploration of this type of personality, done with such depth and empathy that's it's genuinely one of the best depictions of this type of character, and it is HARD to do without feeling insincere or half hearted. It's this show's greatest strength IMO.And this is all while most of the show has really unappealing (on purpose!) character designs to me while the rendering/colors look like it's using amateur 3D rendering/lighting (also most likely on purpose). That stuff, plus the absence of what I consider good about this show, was all absent on from the first episode, which got me thinking this was not gonna have anything for me, so it's cool it got better! and knowing this isn't made with the same soulless corpos at the top that most of the media I end up experiencing has helps me see the soul in this as intentional instead of as present despite itself, so that's a little refreshing too.

#sfmt2026 93. Spiderman Brand New Day superhero movies might be getting back on track?? Not amazing and still a bit messy from being part of the marvelverse but might as well be amazing compared to Marvel's latest stuff
LIKE man it absolutely shows that this film isn't all greenscreen nonsense from underpaid and stressed out VFX artists, there's a sense of new york Place in some of the mundane scenes, there's like, actual fight choreography, there's even?? commentary on modern day loneliness and character juxtapositions that add to scenes and their emotional uh, undertones? overt tones? like there's actually shit happening here that's not just Quips and Plot so like yaay it made the bare minimum to make a movie and thank god they did it for Spiderman I like that man
It's still bogged down by marvelisms by setting up things that will obviously lead to other movies and plot threads in future movies and they sure do have Scorpion here but they kinda really don't do anything with him? So again, not perfect, but not distractingly so until after credits start

#sfmt2026 88. Resident Evil Village What a bizarre game. Assumedly still better than whatever RE6 was, and it still uses some of the gameplay/framing language of the scarier RE7, but it's much more a retread of FE4 in scale, action and the ramping up of stakes/tone than anything else, somehow.

#sfmt2026 83. Gachiakuta (season 1) this fuckin rules, art style goes hardstyle delicious punk in either form (I kinda prefer the lines of the manga though), punk stylings and substance with a heart that gets slowly developed, can't wait for more!!
Following the anime, then reading the manga chapters shortly after was a really cool way to experience this, as the differences and strengths of each medium get to stand out - Bones does such a good job adapting the manga, heightening the action, adding a little detail here and there, shuffling things around slightly to fit the TV length of an episode, but man, for my taste, the manga is where it's at. There are bold lines and texture to the lines in both mediums, but its crunchier and cooler in the manga.
Anyway, pretty strong start for this series! Speaking of just what's covered in the anime, which follows the manga pretty closely, even though in my estimation it didn't start off right away really good, it got real good with the world and Rudo's experiences getting more varied and letting him grow and think in a pretty organic feeling (if very in your face) way, in such a way that it makes the dour and edgy start kinda necessary, as a juxtaposition with what comes after. And there's a real sense of punk-ness too, and not just blind rage (since that's just where Rudo starts, and grows from) nor a combative attitude wearing the punk clothes but not embodying the punk spirit, because there's a good sense of community among the main characters and the world they inhabit, real moments of celebration and creativity too, it's so so nice to see a shounen slow down and color in the world like this, it's nice!! While the side characters haven't had too much going on for them yet, what's there is pretty organically sprinkled in there without losing too much focus on Rudo. And man, I actually really like Zanka a lot?? The "regular joe that tries to surpass genius" schtick is a well explored shounen topic but there's just something about Zanka and his arc that really does it for me.
Extremely looking forward to more. I need more of this. The art's delicious, the character design pops off often, sometimes the fights are cool, and I think the magic system is great. Adapting that japanese sense of everyday objects deserving care and growing with said care and love, inhabiting souls, even, and making it a shounen battle thing is mega cool. Only thing I can say I don't like about it is the crazy poison guy, he leans way too hard into the "I'M CRAAZY" personality type that just feels flat to me. The rest of the raiders are cool/entertaining though!!

#sfmt2026 81. Deltarune chapter 5 it's fucking deltarune maaan
As usual, full spoilers in the text sections!!

Prolly unfortunately my least favorite chapter so far and by which I really mean least in small text and favorite in big text because I still really liked it. I think it just hit in a time of my life I wasn't quite Receptive to absorb it fully and yeeah that's okay. It still got me buzzing a bit with where the story is, well, eventually gonna go, since this wasn't a big thud mic drop of plot advancement or anything, and it's not like it's the finale, so ultimately that's okay. It's just, idk, a little more would be nice. THAT being said though...
There are still fascinating little things in this chapter. The sense that the fiction's (the dark world) artifice is waning, that the "rules" aren't so important anymore, with Flowery flagrantly shortcutting maximum comfort without making Asgore work for it and Ralsei entering his hater mode because of that, Ralsei outright holding your hands across spikes that would normally block your progress in a cutscene, stuff like that, while other story bits reinforce what kinda ideas this story is going for, with the whole pizzapants debacle showing more explicitly the discomfort of watching someone be happy with a lie, or going through the crashout of being told the truth, just having to hope that it will be for the better, ESPECIALLY in regards to the final shot of the chapter being Susie showing that the dark world is almost everything she's got going for her in life right now. AND when it comes to Noelle and the weird route stuff this time, it's fascinating to me that this same character can be in character in both routes, despite the outcomes being radically different - it's this attention to character that, IMO, makes Deltarune more enjoyable than Undertale in my eyes (not to say that the characters in Undertale are bad, it's just the characters in Deltarune are more fascinating, feel more real). And thank god the run of Darkner "villains" being great hasn't stopped either, Flowery and his voice clips kill me. I didn't feel much for the overall flower cast, but I find their motivations and last stand to be a worthwhile climax, and it's kinda cool we got an alternate take on the mysterious human souls or whatever it was from Undertale.
Still on board with whatever Tobiathan Foxington and his team (which managed to make this series' update cadence not be every 4 years or whatever yay!) cooks up next, another reason to keep going!!!

#sfmt2026 76. Toy Story 5 unfortunately it drops the ball in regards to Toy Story going unnecessarily hard in being existential about how unnecessary it is that we This Many fucking toy story movies now, but I still Enjoyed some of what's here.
Technology is Toys too if only you live like one of those Quirky Imaginative people, ala the series of images of normal vs. creative people that got very meme'd on some years ago, which is like, a very milquetoast point to land on? I can see people hating this movie or feeling really underwhelmed for reasons I would absolutely agree with. But unfortunately I always enjoy "reconnect with your child side :)" type stories and this is one of those (which is, kinda antithetical to 3 of the now 5 toy story movies??). I did like the arc that Jessie goes through with her existential crisis of "oh god I can't fucking do this Again", and the endpoint of "what you experienced mattered in the end, even if it wasn't forever", but it feels neutered since right after we go right back into helping the kid again. While this movie does not reach the "holy shit" height of Toy Story 3 as the toys Braced For the End Of Their Existence nor the absurdist, winding pathways of Holy Shit Kids Can Just Grant Sentience To Anything? and the We're Really Tired, Guys of Woody's arc in toy story 4, toy story 5...will unfortunately be pretty forgettable compared to the rest of the series. I can't say I didn't find the movie to be bad...but it's gonna be a movie that will probably sour on me a lot as time goes on haha

#sfmt2026 75. Sonic Heroes (replay) I played this a lot as a kid. Didn't stop me from nearly crashing out at Team Dark's stages, good fucking lord Far from the heights of the Adventure games, but it's a somewhat interesting permutation of Sonic game design
The game still ends in a Super Sonic fight against a monstrosity in the sky/space so this isn't a waste of time but GOD it gets close. It's kinda crazy that the game more or less positions Team Sonic first, which is the only fun team to play as, so most people will eat their dessert first and then find that they have to eat dirt next with any of the other teams (except Rose, which is only slightly sweet cotton candy, i.e., you sure can blaze through those stages without much thought or struggle or excitement). On top of that, you've got to play the horrendous special stages with bizarre momentum that will conspire to make you stop or lose speed at spots that don't make sense to, and you only get one shot these once per stage clear, and that's if you make it to the end with a key that disappears if you lose a life or get hit, and all of that is genuinely enough to make anyone in the modern age never see Metal Overlord if they value their free time nor has a special obsession with Sonic. I have a nostalgic connection to Sonic and this particular game, plus save states, so that got me through fine enough. And the weird progression I ended up taking I think helped, since I got Chaotic and Dark out of the way first, then Rose, then finally Sonic. I ended with the actual part of the game, after having gotten familiar with the game's jank, so I was A ranking at least half of the stages. Finally, the game got fun!! And that's because Team Sonic's the only one where you can feel the stage design was tailored to what you expect from a Sonic game - different routes (and the faster routes needing skill/some quick decision making to take), play well, go fast. Team Dark emphasized...uh, difficulty, which Team Sonic took to mean stages that are a fucking pain to play with unfun combat emphasized and shit to make you slow down. Team Rose is the little brother mode - little friction, game signposts what you should do, you do it. Team Chaotix...well, that's where they put all the weird shit that the new team system lets them do. It's about as well considered as...well, a lot of other things in this game, not /pos. Anyway, all that aside, and the usual jank with movement and momentum in these pre-boost Sonic 3D stages, Sonic Heroes is actually pretty great in my estimation - based on the vibes, that is. I love spooky castle, garish casino, tube and hard light future city, beach zone, rail canyon, egg fleet...the stages are cool!! The music is great!! And not a whiff of Green Hill zone in sight, it's a beauty!! In particular I think I love the Mystic Mansion theme a lot, but only the soundtrack version - the stage version which just loops different sections of the song based on what part of the stage you're in get a bit too repetitive too fast, especially if you're stuck on a section. I really like...I think it's called Hang Castle? a lot too, swapping between the right side up and up side down versions of the song as you progress is so good. And I really really like Final Fortress as well, the oppressive atmosphere gets me hyped. Which is ultimately a letdown because Egg Emperor is the follow up and that boss...all of them really...really, really suck. At least Egg Emperor can be cheesed with a leveled up Fly thunder shoot.
Also, was anyone going to tell me that Vector is lowkey kinda cute? He blows bubblegum to glide. That's cute.

#sfmt2026 74. Mina the Hollower mousey game!! Wasn't sure I would like this since I find 2D zelda games as not my cup of tea but there's enough DNA from other games to make most of this game quite enjoyable!!
Pros; soundtrack's got great chiptune bangers, some of the best in the business, I like vibe of the city in the game, I like how satisfying it is to make progress and find new stuff, great secrets, able to get most of the way to 100% (didn't reach 100%, I got like, 98%) with a decent amount of "aha" moments and maybe like only one or two search engine uses, main character is cute and has some expressive poses, and I found the difficulty for the majority of the game to be just right for me, overall most of this game is a delight! But maan those times when the game is not the right difficulty for me, it's a goddamn pain. A few bosses are a lot more awful than fun or strategic, the spark system is yet another dark souls bloodstain mechanic which is a thing I'm souring on in the last year (and at least it's trivialized early enough with getting more sparks and bones being relatively easy to grind if necessary but still, maaan), and hard top down action stuff like this is ultimately not my cup of tea at the end of the day - a taste thing to be sure, since what's here was still fun enough to have even me have some fun - but half of the time I will resort to trying to bully my way out of encounters with more HP and healing rather than trying to be skillful. And hey, this game is open ended enough to let me do that, even without any of the many, many modifiers that can be turned on to make the game easier, or turn off the penalty for the spark system which I disliked, if only I could just put away the smidge of "gamer pride" to do so...Also, while the story Is There and in the ending has a kinda nuanced (on the glass half empty side of things) take on technology, the indolence of the spirit that can take root in society when people start to take conveniences for granted and such, it does leave a bit of a sour taste, since I didn't see the journey leading up to that ending have a rich exploration of the kind of world this is to make that ending hit as it should, I think. It's clear there is a world and ideas for this world, and that it's bigger than Mina and the Hollowers and all, but I feel like we didn't get to explore enough of it, or that the ideas or themes the game could have built up weren't executed much at all. And to be fair, that stuff isn't the priority I think, given what we have is a gameplay first kinda deal, but they painted this world juust enough where I think it's opened the door for an excellent narrative, vibe, commentary or exploration of A Human Condition, etc., to have been also inside this package, but it isn't. Real glad to see a studio of this caliber attempt it though! I loved Shovel Knight, but that one was an even more of a tongue in cheek setting and narrative, choosing parody and humor instead of having serious, more "high brow" narrative/worldbuilding ambitions, like Mina. With any luck, Yacht Club Games will, in the future, get the writing talent together with their existing gameplay and systems talent together for something truly special. After Shovel Knight 3D of course, if that's still on the table.

#sfmt2026 70. The Backrooms movie Better than I expected tbh! Mythologizing the backrooms as a space that manifests memory (in ways that are imperfect, like memory is) is indeed a scary realm, and the movie gets psychological with it. Right amount of ambiguity. Delicious set design too

Not really obscure picks, aside from a few, but still things that would be cool if more people played, and are on Steam!!
