me, age 20: Oh, Mrs. Bennett, your 'nerves'. Sooo annoying. 🙄 me, age 48, in perimenopause: This woman has 5 DAUGHTERS and NO MONEY and a husband WHO WON'T WORK and spends all his time SMIRKING IN A LAY-Z BOY, staring at PIG BALLS and at any moment the whole family will be HOMELESS.

I always started training new inspectors with the Sesame Street method - one of these things is not like the other, go find out why. Maybe it's fine, maybe it's not, but you'll learn the system better that way anyway

My favorite one was my apparent intense interest in maintaining air purification machinery because I've bought filters multiple times. It's the first thing people notice about me - my love of oxygen

My gym hero is the old woman who goes with her husband, does a few laps around the gym (not on the treadmill, just milling about the floor), and sits in the front waiting area reading for the rest of the time. She's living her best life, he gets to do his workout, and they walk out holding hands

Such a great museum for low-level horrors, both radiological and culinary
Part of the nuclear fallout shelter exhibit contains shelves full of era-accurate branding of emergency supplies, such as this tempting paint can full of something called Multi Purpose Food

Based on the color of the campaign signs I saw there are no Republicans running for anything in CT this year. Do they think people will accidentally vote for them if they think they're Democrats? I'd prefer statements denouncing the party's platforms but yeah, changing colors is sure to be enough

It's the updated version of "I'd like to have a beer with that guy" and it's just as dumb to pick a politician based on who would be fun to hang out with virtually as IRL. I want a president who is good at governing! Not one with the best insult comic skills

King's Quest: dad and his coworkers would pass pirated copies of most of the Sierra games around and these were my favorites The Beast Within: werewolf? There, wolf. Great, detailed story and I thought the video cutsets were so cool. A video on my computer?

Discomfort is an essential part of growth and wouldn’t it be so embarrassing to be the exact same person thirty years from now, in a totally different world, because you were so averse to discomfort?

Once you start noticing how the incapacity to handle discomfort affects how people live their lives it's actually pretty shocking how it ruins pretty much every conceivable aspect of existence. Interpersonal relationships, romantic and platonic. Career and education opportunities. Your politics Your willingness to go anywhere. The kind of food you eat. The kind of art you expose yourself to and your ability to read it. It's never just one thing, it touches everything, and once you notice it it's like suddenly being able to see germs or something. Just this horrific catastrophe people look at you askance for screaming about. As I grow older and see what became of my friends and peers who could not learn to handle discomfort, the more I'm like. This is a genuine societal issue

Increasing my discomfort tolerance has also been one of the greatest assets to improving my mental health.
