Still mad that the most fun bike I own is an off-brand track dropout beat up thing saved from a skip :D Most expensive part on it? fix-free rear hub, 25€ used. Commute on it every day, and thanks to being no frills no gears it feels fast and oh so fun <3

sumanguru @sumanguru.bsky.social · 30/09/2026

We are talking much less than 5kg in reality too. Get an inexpensive Bianchi rim brake steel road bike from the 90s and it's most likely under 10kg - just 3kg above the UCI weight limit. With better tubesets you can be much lighter still

sumanguru @sumanguru.bsky.social · 07/09/2026

I don't disagree? We weren't talking about prediction markets? I don't think Rodney Brooks was participating in a prediction market by publishing thorough future predictions either? Sorry if my original reply was off-track but now we're thoroughly in the weeds

100

sumanguru @sumanguru.bsky.social · 07/09/2026

Sure, but I feel at that point we're descending into pedantry, so it's not a conversation I'm interested in. I simply think there is a difference between an interpersonal bet and a publicly stated opinion.

100

sumanguru @sumanguru.bsky.social · 07/09/2026

I don't think it is helpful to classify this kind of predictive analysis as "self-betting". There isn't two competing viewpoints that resolve after some time, only one. Nor is there a direct reward structure, financial or otherwise.

230

sumanguru @sumanguru.bsky.social · 07/09/2026

If the goal of an argument switches to trying to make the other person look bad, I don't think that contributes to a healthy discussion culture like the original thread was seeking.

100

sumanguru @sumanguru.bsky.social · 07/09/2026

Sure, if you are having a conversation with someone irl who you would, say, make dinner for. At least I read the original thread in context of disagreements online, where the scope for arguing in bad faith is much wider, and options for making bets more limited.

000

sumanguru @sumanguru.bsky.social · 07/09/2026

If they're not having a conversation in good faith then why have a conversation to begin with? This I don't get. Internet points? You're clearly not changing their mind

100

sumanguru @sumanguru.bsky.social · 07/09/2026

So the desired outcome is the end of an argument? You can get to the same point by just not pressing the reply button and doing something else. This doesn't improve the quality of the conversation being had.

100

sumanguru @sumanguru.bsky.social · 07/09/2026

If someone is refusing to clarify terms and the point of their disagreement then what sense does it make to have a conversation with them to begin with?

200

sumanguru @sumanguru.bsky.social · 07/09/2026

Yes, and that is great! But it is distinctly different from betting, which is what is being discussed in the thread

260

sumanguru @sumanguru.bsky.social · 07/09/2026

If you want to improve the level of conversation on a topic then do that through conversation, why must we financialize every possible disagreement

100

sumanguru @sumanguru.bsky.social · 07/09/2026

Have you considered that people may not want to place bets for reasons that aren't conceding to your point? You said it yourself that this kind of betting is off-putting to many, and people are, in general, risk-averse.

The idea is nice, and if the mods to the frame itself were just a couple holes - sure, knock yourself out. But the guy cut off shifter bosses to fit the battery bag, so he later had to relocate the rear shifter to under the seat. With such a gorgeous vintage race frame? Just ain't right

Second AF attack: @pitchin.bsky.social 's character Piina, a former lighting design student turned vampire, in an element familiar to both her and I 😖 #artfight

A drawing of a chubby vampire woman sitting on top of a truss. She has chin length blonde hair, a round face, round glasses and light blue eyes. She has a septum ring and snakebite piercings, and black lipstick. She is wearing a purple top and dark blue shorts, and black ankle boots.

AF attack for user Smoll-Dragon, their very neat cryptid OC Amity reaching towards a UFO in the sky. #artfight

Bust upwards illustration of a furry character with four long ears. They have green hair that covers their right eye, black horns with multiple prongs and patterned with stars and black fluffy hair on their chest. The fur on their face, ears and arm and paw is white. They are reaching upwards toward the viewer with their right paw, showing their green paw pads and green claws. Their eyes have black sclera and white pupils. They are bathed in green light from above.

We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings. Resistance and change often begin in art, and very often in our art, the art of words.
