I've always viewed liminal spaces as "If I walk here for too long I'll end up Somewhere Else™️" and while *some* urban settings fulfill that, like an alleyway devoid of all life, I feel like "Misty, Soundless Forest" and "Barren Beach, the waves your only company" fit way better.

I may have a different definition of achievements than you, Kayin, but I feel like the concept *of them* has existed for a very long time, it just wasn't codified into this non-interactive, boring version we have today until the PS3/360 era of gaming.

SotN had Luck Mode, you could only access it on the PS1 after you beat the game. The GBA Castlevania Metroidvanias had their own things related to that, cuz what *I* find most appealing about the concept of achievements is that they should add replayability AFTER YOU GET THEM.

The concept behind achievements has existed long before the 360 was a glint in the eyes of its creators. They just weren't called that, they were called "unlocks". Smash Melee had its Challenge Board, for example, each challenge could give you something, like a stage or a character.

But if they are tracked in-game and have unlocks related to them, *that's* when it gets cool. I'd argue that the Extra Stages in Touhou are unlocked via an in-game Achievement-like system, you beat the main game 1CC, so now you have permanent access to the Extra Stage.

Achievements are fun in games that have them built into them. As a meta-thing, above the game, not interacting with it, they serve only to prove to your friends that you did a thing that may or may not be difficult, or to serve as a metric of progress.

The Nice Boat meme started due to the final episode of School Days being a little to close to an incident in Kyoto of a 16 year old girl committing axe murder on her father. They replaced the timeslot with footage of a Norwegian ferry.

There's actual real-life lore for the Nice Boat meme, there was a serial killer in Japan that was active at the time who would leave only the shoes of his victims at the scene of the crime, one of the death anims for one of the Crash Bandicoot games had to be changed in Japan for the same reason.
