For DEPTH PERCEPTION's third anniversary edition, some of the sharpest journalists shared their thoughts on the state of the industry. Media critic @sulliview.bsky.social feels hopeful for the future when she sees writers "who clearly care a lot, and when I see people doing important cultural work"
Graphic with DEPTH PERCEPTION branding and headshots of journalists Ryan Broderick, Eliot Williams, Margaret Sullivan, Nicholas Thompson, Laura Jedeed, Chuck Todd, Julia Angwin, Dave Jorgenson, Jelani Cobb, and Anthony Breznican with blue overlay, and text: "People are still curious." This description of the CNN/CBS “editorial independence board” is not reassuring, because there is no sign that it has any actual power. Also, the requirement that the journalists on the board be from different political parties is exceptionally weird. Via @brianstelter.bsky.social
Under the settlement terms, that board must be established within 180 days of closing and comprise of five "established journalists (active or retired)," each with at least 10 years of experience.
The panel will resolve disputes over
"alleged reporting bias or failure to meet agreed reporting fairness standards" and monitor "editorial independence,
including from... ownership and shareholders." Members will be appointed by the company's board of directors, and "no more than two" may be
"affiliated" with the same political party.

I was deputy M.E. at the WSJ when Murdoch took over, with a similar “editorial independence board.” Within 4 months, our top editor was gone, replaced by a loyal Murdoch deputy. That board raised a quivering objection, but the deed was done. If the Ellisons own CNN, they’ll do whatever they want.

I see the NYT is still platforming 'dei crushed white men' bullsh*t. Here it's buried in a 'why rural themed pop culture' is so popular in a piece written by a Princeton grad who lives in New York City. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/13/o...
Today, it’s country music that — for all its commercial success — represents the underdog. As diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives accord advantages to everyone except straight white men; as globalization and an urban, knowledge-based economy have impoverished and emptied out rural communities; and as trust in institutions including higher education and the federal government declines, the culture of rural working-class whites can symbolize an unconstrained way of life that stands apart from the stifling, all-encompassing H.R. bureaucracy that everyone else lives in.
