Fungi are appearing in woods now, marking the start of Suillia season, as these spiny-winged flies hold territory atop their chosen cap. Suillia notata here at Cali Heath @yorkswildlife.bsky.social reserve today. ID help here... dipterists.org.uk/heleomyzid-s... @dipteristsforum.bsky.social

It's that late summer time of year when parasitic tachinid flies are abundant...these all in numbers at the @ldvnnr.bsky.social centre at Bank Island yesterday. Tachina fera, Linnaemya picta, Phasia obesa and Voria ruralis...bugs and moths beware! @ynuorg.bsky.social @dipteristsforum.bsky.social

Tachina magnicornis has clearly loved the hot summer...a species new to Yorkshire, but outnumbering Tachina fera in East Yorkshire wherever I am looking at the moment. A huge influx from the south it appears. @dipteristsforum.bsky.social @ynuorg.bsky.social @northcavewet.bsky.social
A female Tachina magnicornis feeding on top of a Mayweed flower at North Cave Wetlands in East Yorkshire. A parasitic fly similar to the common Tachina fera, but with a broader frons, dark front tarsi and a narrow abdominal stripe.

There have been convincing records in 2026 of Buff-tailed Villa (V. hottentotta) in Kent and Essex. Please check carefully if you find something that looks like Dune Villa (V. modesta) but in locations away from the dune habitats.

Lots of action around exposed sand banks at Allerthorpe Common @yorkswildlife.bsky.social reserve today. Astata boops seems well established there now and Green Tigers, Ammophila sabulosa, Anoplius nigerrimus all very active in the sun. Super little reserve. 🙂 @ynuorg.bsky.social #hymenoptera

Infuscated cross-veins and I don't think there are spots on T4, so should be podagrica (common) or obliqua (which likes Butterbur).

Heads up folks Some Tabanidae that were sampled from the Canopy Tower at the Soltis Center, Costa Rica These images show both differences in eye patterns & antennal branching. Sadly the eye patterns disappear as they desicate so images are important #FlySchool2026 @dipteracourse.bsky.social

This one was outside in a row of bargain-price trees. Saw a female 28th May and then 11 days later potted this one in exact same spot (same individual...maybe not?). Interestingly, the apple tree had fungi growing from the pot and there were also a few male C. cristatus in that one spot only.
