I lived in Saudi Arabia for some years and when it did rain and leave rare puddles on the trails at our horse club, most of the horses were all Nope, no way no how am I treading in that.

Once I was sure I'd broken a pony's leg when it dipped almost to his knee into some random hole. He was fine.

A walk makes it hard to make your rider fall off. Even at a trot, the horse could simply stop dead suddenly at a mere puddle and tip the rider off over its shoulder if they weren't paying attention. At a walk you need the horse to spook at something. A weird light reflection on a puddle?

It's the classic "What I do is creative, skilled and interesting; what you do is easy and formulaic and nowhere near as worthwhile," applied to the question of AI.

Not cool. Implying that all Jews are OK with committing genocide on Palestinians *is* antisemitic. If it said Zionists, maybe …

Australians – remember the CES?

Oh I meant the Australian visa for my husband. Getting permanent residence for a spouse seemed pretty straighforward in those days.

Most Australians would think it was interesting if their friend married someone overseas and look forward to meeting them. When I married my Chinese husband in China in 1986, the visa process was neither long nor expensive. I feel so sad for the way Australia behaves now.

The fund-raising agencies must be having a special on will-scouting. I got one too from the Catherine Hamblin Fistula Foundation, very worthy cause and all that, but it's the first time the've asked me for a bequest.

Imagine if car manufacturers just said 'Oops, car's gone rogue again!' when the steering failed on the highway.

Entirely off topic, the first post on my feed over on Facebook was A Mighty Girl talking up Nettle & Bone, and then over here, this post of yours was first. Just thought that was a fun fact.

Same with ads on Facebook spruiking health products with stories from pretend real people. Swathes of text before they finally mention the product that supposedly saved the day. Bizarre.

Well, good luck. I very politely asked my dying mum's hospital roommate if she would use headphones if I got her some (scrolling Tiktok, loud, all hours), and she was outraged. She had probems too, did I know. Why was I doing this to her?

She's on fire. Forced them to shut up and listen.

Oh no! And yes, those places are often seen as just a kind of limbo on the way to death anyway, and you get the callous and ageist attitude that residents may as well die sooner of Covid than later of whatever else.

It went through my dad's aged care place after a visitor brought it in – oh yes, somone at home had it, no biggie, right? I don't know who died or not as a result, but my friend's mum was left with a grievous cough that seriously affected her quality of life for her remaining 8 months or so.

What's the bet the risks are covered by just importing more fossil-fueled power from the mainland in dry years, and extra costs borne by Tasmanians.

So it's not about the curriculum at all, but about women being teachers? That makes so much more sense: of course women made them do it! /s

I'm currently in the middle of PhD research that is showing unequivocally that this is not even close to a thing. Women are still massively underrepresented in the curriculum and almost every teacher I interviewed raised the manosphere's influence on male students as an explicit blocker.

I really want to hear a journalist ask Canavan to explain what he even means by the feminisation of the curriculum. Which parts? In what way? Has he read it?

Heaps of comments saying no-one in the photos of 'missing Aussies' is Australian, etc. Many of them bots with locked profiles, 7 friends and 6,500 posts. Concerted campaign to make racism seem more mainstream.

Just because big tech companies want to move at hyperspeed, doesn’t mean we need to fast track & roll out the red carpet for them. We need to consider very carefully the impact on workers, as well as the mega extraction of our intelligence, knowledge, culture, water and energy.

It’s important to be clear that the truth value of a subject does not become debatable just because somebody wants to debate. Ether. Wandering wombs. Devils in red heads, the cursed left handed. Flat earth. Phrenology. Humors. Race science. “Debate me bro!” It’s fine for the answer to be: no.

So basically, there's some hand-wringing and one small project doing some training sessions in schools. No serious government effort to stop the underlying hate campaign against women.

Israel's impunity has been virtually unaffected by collective concern
Even the United States is now criticising Israel's ongoing settler violence in the West Bank as Benjamin Netanyahu, once the "Trump whisperer", becomes the Trump ignorer.

I took the CIEP copyediting courses. They're online, with a group chat and personal feedback from a tutor. Got some of the worst marks I've ever got – they're tough! – but I learned a lot.

She was very self-reliant and hated asking for help as she (herself with major health problems) cared for my dementia-afflicted father. I did help, but I regret not having pushed in to help more.

My mum used to laugh (bitterly) when agencies would actually say 'You may want to get a carer or relative to help you fill in the form.' Just design the process right in the first place!

I'm an editor, and I'm getting manuscripts wherer authors are bending semicolons and commas and whatnot out of shape just to avoid a dash. It's really sad.

Sue Young @suetas.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
This is why even 'I just used it for copyediting' is so bad, if the user hasn't the skill to assess (let's just go ahead and say 'reject') the suggestions.

What gets me about this em dash thing is that all well-read humans know AI did not invent the em dash, AI writing doesn't even use em dashes that often anymore, and yet the em dash zombie Will Not Die.

1. Recently I’ve received lots of emails from people I don’t know personally, asking for my feedback on their books or papers. They explain the connection between my work and theirs and ask me to take a look. The catch, of course, is that the emails are transparently, obviously, written by AI.

Yeah, I guess? For sure, no decent person can look at ICE in action and say 'Yeah, shock gloves seem like what these thugs need!' But I reckon giving kids electric shocks has a pretty big ick factor whoever's doing it.
