Mobland has been in standard Guy Ritchie territory, elevated by showrunner Jez Butterworth's literary cred & an A-list cast. But with tonight's episode, S2 Ep 3, the head-to-head of smart, softspoken players of extraordinarily dangerous villains - Johnny Flynn & Tom Hardy - this story ignites.

What a great 7 x 7 event at the Winnipeg Book Festival this afternoon. SO MANY people at the Forks to hear about writing, editing, bookselling, publishing. Here I am, hosting: listening to award-winning author (and singer and lawyer and...!) Zilla Jones.

Did I just see an ad for Lord of the Flies Season 2? I mean, I read this novel. Because I had to. Anyway, I don't remember any hope of continuation or basically anything resembling a future.

Sometimes after a tough day, you just need to watch a western. The Long Riders is better than I remember. I fondly recalled the long dusters. But there's more here than romantic coats. Good attention to female roles, great cinematography, excellent horses & serious brotherly love in the casting.

am holding out for the Lee Child novel where Reacher makes cookies or homemade soup for one of those incredibly tough, smart, beautiful woman cops or soldiers he accidentally ends up solving everything with, instead of just stealing a car with her and going to a diner and snapping a bunch of necks

Students in film class want to know unusual things. Like: Which Winnipeg hotel did Charlie Chaplin stay in? 🤨 (In 1914, it was the Windsor Hotel--called another name at the time--which burned down 109 years later.)

Can’t eat a sandwich until you subscribe to sandwiches. Can’t eat today’s sandwich until it has applied daily sandwich updates. Sandwich now has adverts even though you paid for ad-free sandwich. Can pay again to have less sandwich adverts. Now you can eat the sandwich, but it’s smaller.

Bugs the hell out of me that a far-right party is using the term "alternative." When my student council slate at URegina campaigned in 1984 we were "The Positive Alternative" & it meant something. I'm sick of the right stealing words like freedom. Alternative isn't for fascists. It's for Radiohead.

I've been avoiding blanching a ton of green beans from my friend's yard (they're away and asked me to do it) but then I recalled that Ridley Scott has directed five movies since he turned 80 so I figured I ought to be able to get the job done. I did it, no big deal, & now I'm ready to make a movie.
