Love the outdoors and used to love getting out into my local Sussex countryside with my camera. Now it’s mostly memories.

Wow. Well that was a surprise, but a good one. A Severe Alert issued by the U.K. Government just now, warning against use of any kind of outdoor fire and/or fireworks. Good to know the Alert System works. Let’s just hope EVERYBODY heeds the warnings.

This lovely visitor came to our garden early this morning. It stayed for quite a while, until spooked by our Cocker Spaniel Kinsey wandering past. #HummingbirdHawkMoth #Sussex #OM1Mk1
Day-flying moth Hummingbird Hawk-moth nectaring on a red Salvia flower, with out-of-focus green leaves and stalks in the background, visiting a Sussex garden.
It’s hovering with wingbeats of around 80 beats per second, so the wings are a blur to the naked eye. The wings are shades of honey-brown, the head is a little more grey and the black and white markings on its rump are clearly visible. The moth looks hairy but what appear to be hairs are scales or tiles. The long proboscis is deep inside the red Salvia flower, as it takes nectar before flying to the next flower.
There’s a faint hum audible as it dashes from flower to flower, and the optical illusion of a pseudopupil, which happens when the specific tiny lenses called ommatidia in the eye are pointing directly at me, makes the moth’s eye seem to stare right at me.

Last night’s waxing gibbous Moon, at 21.12 BST. I’d been in Lewes for most of the day, so driving home at about 19.30 the light was beautiful, as I passed the South Downs of Mount Caburn, then Beddingham Hill came into view, with Firle Beacon, Bo-Peep, and Windover’s Long Man. I love that drive.
Our natural satellite The Moon, waxing gibbous at 178.95°. It’s a completely clear sky with just a hint of dark blue before night descends completely. The Moon is a warm colour after the sunset.
The crater Copernicus is clear to see, as are craters Tycho, Timocharis, Eratosthenes, Aristillus, and Plato.
The mares visible are Imbrium, Frigoris, Nubia, Serenitatis, Tranquillitatis, Crisium, Fecunditatis, and Nectaris and are all showing well.
The crater Sinus Iridum is just at the terminator line.

WE HAVE AVOCET NEWS!!! An Avocet spotted at RSPB Middleton Lakes has been confirmed as the oldest ever recorded in the UK. At 36 years old, it's lived more than five times longer than the species' average lifespan. First ringed in 1990, it's still out there doing Avocet things. Go on Avocet. 😍
An Avocet strides across the edge of a wetland, one leg lifted mid-step as if caught in an elegant strut. Its striking black-and-white plumage and long upturned bill stand out against a softly blurred backdrop of green reeds.

All my fellow class members are around my age and we’re all creaking a bit! Our fantastic instructor just suggests we do as much as we feel capable of and comfortable with, making sure we don’t put ourselves at risk. And it’s something I can practise at home. The NHS has online videos that I watch.

Hear, hear. I started classes a few weeks ago. I love it but am absolutely exhausted by the end of the class, and mine are only 60 minutes. My knees aren’t keen, either.

At last, the first hint of green on “my” Oak tree. Last week there was no sign but a few warm, sunny days have made all the difference. And there’s the bonus of a tiny, heart-shaped cloud, bright in the sunshine. #Oak #OakTree #EnglishOak #HeartOfOak #Sussex #Berwick
A lone, mature Oak tree at the edge of a field on a fairly flat landscape, with trees and countryside stretching to the horizon.
The Oak is shaped by the prevailing South-Westerly wind and mid-way through April there’s the first hint of green on its branches after the long, wet Winter. The wide trunk and lower branches are ivy-covered, always green throughout the year.
The sky is a light blue with pale lines of cloud and contrails, with one tiny heart-shaped cloud bright in the sunshine.

I’m just finishing off my online supermarket order before delivery tomorrow. I’ve just added a pack of four small pears to the list. £2.50. That works out at about 63p each. In old money that’s just over 12/6. TWELVE SHILLINGS AND SIXPENCE FOR A SINGLE PEAR!!!! Good grief.

This morning’s early morning drive on Pevensey Levels brought mist, frost, birds, and a brand-new life just beginning. #Lamb #Newborn #Sheep #PevenseyLevels #Sussex

Oh, yuck. At least you found it. Mind you, I discovered this morning that our local fox had pooped on our front doorstep, right on the UPVC framing of a panel by the front door. It’s left a horrid stain and I’m trying to decide how best to tackle it without using an abrasive scouring cream. 🙄

It’s Full Moon tomorrow morning, so tonight I thought I’d get a shot with just a few shadow details along the lower edge. It’s a Worm Moon, the time of year when the weather’s warming up and earthworms begin to emerge. #Moon #FullMoon #WormMoon #OM1mk2
Almost full Worm Moon, named so because the weather’s warming and the earthworms are emerging after Winter.
There are just a few shadows along details along the lower edge of the Moon, as it’s still a a few hours until Full.
It’s a late evening shot so the sky is black, but the “face” of the man in the moon, and many other details are clearly visible.

Just for reference, here’s a photo of the outside of St. Mary’s that I took a few years ago, during the summer of 2020 when we were out of lockdown and I felt a need to just visit and try to find comfort during all that horrendous time of COVID at its worst.
A Summer view of St. Mary’s Church in Binsted, the grass overgrown and, despite the season, heavy grey clouds over the tiny 12th century church.

I’m not religious, however, my parents did believe and so when they died in 1996, we scattered their ashes in the churchyard near to their home. Flint-built St. Mary’s Church in Binsted is tiny and charming. It dates back to the 12th century and is in the middle of the Sussex countryside.

Another wall! 😊 This is part of the wall surrounding St. Mary’s Church in Binsted. I visit the churchyard occasionally as my parents’ ashes are scattered there, but hadn’t noticed before that between the larger knapped flints the edge-on flint shards look quite lethal. #wall #FlintWall #Sussex
Close-up section of flint wall surrounding St. Mary’s Church, Binsted in West Sussex.
Some of the flint is knapped, the stone chipped away to expose a smooth inner surface forming the outer face of the wall.
This particular wall also has small shards of flint in the binding cement (or whatever material was used to keep the wall solid). The shards are edge on, and look sharp despite being old, and are probably left over from knapping the large flintstones.

I’ve been noble and been to the gym this morning. Haven’t been for a while (unexpected break in Norfolk, then ill with a bug) so it was hard work. What made it worse is that it feels cold and raw outside, a real shock to the system. I’d rather be tucked up in a blanket, like #Kinsey was earlier.

It was my sons’ diagnoses that caused me to wonder about myself. Then it all kinda clicked into place. My diagnosis is actually ADHD with Autism - I believe it’s called AuDHD - and I’m busy reading up on that now! It all explains so much. 😢 Hope you get a diagnosis soon. #ADHD #AuDHD

Spring is coming. The view from my window is different now the rising sun is further in the East. Our Blackbird is greeting each morning with song, and again in the evening, reaffirming his right to his territory. Our Blue Tits spend hours at the nest box, the precursor to nesting. Begone, Winter.
A back garden in Sussex, England, still dark before the sun rises properly, but with Winter silhouettes of bare-branched mature Oak and Ash trees, the clear sky of dawn already blue above the trees. There’s a glow down low through the trees as the sun, thought not visible, causes the sky to turn pink.

🙁 Drat, I wish I’d known you were suffering. I could have suggested breaks, for relief. I had a similar reaction when I first got mine, thought I just didn’t cope well. Last week’s ADHD diagnosis explains a lot. When my aids were new I’d need quiet breaks from the cacophony suddenly in my head.

Nope! It’s actually Sandringham, in Norfolk. Was up there a couple of weeks ago for the Pink-footed Geese. It rained a LOT, but the sight and sound of thousands of geese in the fields and overhead made it worthwhile.
