PotterySue @suedecker.bsky.social · 17/09/2026My new obsession is with making butter bells, which keep your butter safe and spreadable on the counter. These will make their debut this Saturday (Sept. 19) at the St. Ann Artisan Market on Yuma Street NW. I hope other people like them too! #pottery #functionalpottery #ceramics #art 0110 0
PotterySue @suedecker.bsky.social · 14/08/2026What I tell my students is that there are a million ways to do pottery. The problem is that finding the right way for you is a process of elimination. 110 0
PotterySue @suedecker.bsky.social · 14/08/2026No need to put clear over stroke and coat! Thinner applications are translucent and thicker is opaque. 010 0
PotterySue @suedecker.bsky.social · 14/08/2026That’s lovely! You’re right that there is so much to explore on your pottery journey but this is great! It took me a year to get something completely round 😜 110 0
PotterySue @suedecker.bsky.social · 14/08/2026He’s only saying the truth. Lots of stupid people in Florida. 010 0
PotterySue @suedecker.bsky.social · 14/08/2026I love them for lots of things (I don’t work for Mayco!). I add a little water if using for full glaze to limit streaks. They can be put on greenware, just like underglaze (except on the bottom of your pot, since they are a glaze). 110 0
PotterySue @suedecker.bsky.social · 14/08/2026Have you tried using the Mayco Stroke and Coats, if your studio allows them? They can be super vibrant, much more than underglazes. 110 0
PotterySue @suedecker.bsky.social · 14/08/2026Hi Jen. It’s Coyote Yellow Cream Satin glaze. I was surprised at how shiny it is because their other satin glazes are matte. 110 0

PotterySue @suedecker.bsky.social · 06/08/2026One of the many wonderful things about living in DC is the proximity to the natural world. This #barredowl was hanging out at the end of my street, as curious about me as I was about him. I kept my distance, of course, but never so happy my phone has a zoom lens! #dcwildlife #dcnature #owls 040 0
PotterySue @suedecker.bsky.social · 04/08/2026You can’t imagine how excited and honored I am to be part of a pottery market at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, particularly to support an exhibit by extraordinarily talented Pueblo Potters who have inspired and awed me for decades. #pottery #womenartists #pueblopotters #nmwa 020 0
PotterySue @suedecker.bsky.social · 03/08/2026One of my favorite glaze combos — 3x Mayco Amber Quartz all over then 2x Mayco Cenote on the inside and outer rim (it’s runny so only an inch down outside). I call is my Star Trek design because it looks like entering warp speed. #pottery #art #ceramics #funglazing 0140 0
PotterySue @suedecker.bsky.social · 30/06/2026Eager to see your results!! Have fun and make sure to leave lots of room at the bottom. 100 0
PotterySue @suedecker.bsky.social · 27/06/2026One of my favorite techniques is to paint the honey flux and then do alternating splotches or lines of different glazes on top of it. The HF will blend them together beautifully. 100 0
PotterySue @suedecker.bsky.social · 27/06/2026Honey flux (and all the Amaco PCF line) is the most gentle of all the various flux products. Don’t be shy in application like you’d have to be with mayco’s flux or running hot chowder. 100 0
PotterySue @suedecker.bsky.social · 27/06/2026Thanks! I painted a thick single coat of honey flux on the entire part of the outside I wanted glazed and then put the opal on top of that. I just wanted to make it move enough to create a fluid, natural line. If you put HF on top, you get too much white and lose most of the color. 210 0
PotterySue @suedecker.bsky.social · 21/06/2026This was only my second time using it. I’m going to experiment with some other combos. I like “”moody, layered” glazes and will hopefully be more diligent at taking photos!!! 000 0
PotterySue @suedecker.bsky.social · 16/06/2026I had this bowl for a hot minute — took it out of the kiln one day and sold it the next. Barely got to photograph it before wrapping it up. Glazes are Amaco’s River Birch River Birch and Seaweed. #pottery #ceramics #art 1161 0

PotterySue @suedecker.bsky.social · 19/04/2026I'm going to have a pretty busy spring, so if you're in the DC area, stop by and say hi! 020 0
PotterySue @suedecker.bsky.social · 19/04/2026Another black clay platter. This one has Spectrum’s Floating Curry. I used some white slip in the center so the glaze would pop more. #pottery #ceramics #art #blackclay 070 0
PotterySue @suedecker.bsky.social · 18/04/2026Still not sure who will get my vote, but this is super helpful! Exactly what I would expect from local journalism. Thanks!!! 020 0
PotterySue @suedecker.bsky.social · 18/04/2026New pasta bowl on brown clay. Glaze is mostly Coyote’s Opal. I added a bit of Amaco’s Honey Flux on the outside to make the glaze edge more fluid since I can’t paint straight glaze lines. #pottery #ceramics #art. 1170 0
PotterySue @suedecker.bsky.social · 17/04/2026Shallow bowl (about 12 inches across). Glazes are Amaco Deep Sienna Speckle, dots of Spectrums Running Hot Chowder, and then a 2x coating of Blue Rutile. #pottery #ceramics #art 0170 0
PotterySue @suedecker.bsky.social · 17/04/2026I add Mason stains to my leftover white clays. Hope to have some out of the kiln in the next week or so. 010 0
PotterySue @suedecker.bsky.social · 17/04/2026So pretty! I particularly like the lower right — the interaction of the glaze and texture are terrific. 110 0
PotterySue @suedecker.bsky.social · 17/04/2026Not at all! The only issue is making sure the clays have a similar shrink rate. I did a vase with other clays once and they separated because of that. 110 0
PotterySue @suedecker.bsky.social · 16/04/2026And you know you’ve been doing it for a while when your back objects to being straight. 110 0

PotterySue @suedecker.bsky.social · 16/04/2026What to do with leftover colored clay? Agateware! These are made from the slip and trimmings from the black clay platters I made and some Standard 182 stoneware. I like to keep the outside unglazed because it just feels so nice in the hands. #pottery #ceramics #art #blackclay 7737 0
PotterySue @suedecker.bsky.social · 15/04/2026Love Honey Flux — I buy it by the gallon. Looks great at the bottom! 000 0
PotterySue @suedecker.bsky.social · 15/04/2026The folks at Spectrum really liked the SiO black porcelain clay from Spain. I have only seen it for sale online at Blick or The Ceramic Shop. I got a sample of Amaco’s dark chocolate at NCECA. It’s in the bisque now but is supposed to be almost black. 000 0
PotterySue @suedecker.bsky.social · 15/04/2026Oooh. That’s really lovely! I use Firebrick on my dark brown clays but it was far more muted in the black clay. I’m using Imco’s black. 010 0
