A Japanese sika deer, saying hello in Nara Park, Japan. Over 1,000 animals have lived there alongside humans since the 8th century, protected as sacred messengers of the Gods. It might be thinking, "You're about to miss the coach," because that's what happened shortly after 😁
A young male sika deer (Cervus nippon) stands calmly on a walkway in Nara Park, its short antlers showing it’s not yet fully mature. A visitor’s hand rests gently on its neck, and the deer appears relaxed - a behaviour shaped by more than 1,200 years of protected coexistence with humans. Nara’s deer were once regarded as sacred messengers of the gods, and that long cultural protection helped create today’s unusually tame, trusting population of more than 1000 animals that freely roam the city’s historic parkland next to Tōdai-ji, the Buddhist temple home to the Great Buddha of Nara.
