I had zero time today to play with my MSX2. Sad day, or night. There are so many games I haven’t been able to run. I’m starting to believe the MSX Pico is to blame and I should try another cartridge. They’re quite expensive though. Hmmm…

The MSX system had interesting ways of dealing with things. You can have things that look like game cartridges but are actually memory or sound expansions. And you can have the expanded audio and regular audio running at the same time which kind of blows my mind a little bit.

Gradius is pretty much a banger across all platforms and it’s great playing it on the MSX 2 here as well. Much more simple graphics than Space Manbow, but it doesn’t matter, still fun.

Space Manbow is a marvel on the MSX 2. The best looking game I’ve seen so far and a blast to play. But man does it get choppy. It’s definitely more suited for an MSX 2+. In the future I’ll see if I can get any more performance out of this one.

I finally decided to look inside my MSX2 to find out what 40 years of use has done to it. I need to redo the solder joints on the p1 controller port, nothing I can see but it isn’t working properly and it’s a little bit jiggly. Also that one big leaky cap needs to go.

Aleste 2 on the MSX2. I was doing so well until my screen glitched out lol. First time I got to stage 3. I was never a big shmup guy, but this game is fun and challenging. I keep coming back to it.

Last Saturday I met a couple of guys that were into retro games as well as a little store I didn’t know about. They had the Brazilian made famiclone I owned originally back in the late 80s, early 90s. Brazil was known for famiclones. This one was made by a Brazilian electronics company, Gradiente.

A pet peeve of mine is when I’m watching some kind of vlog or similar on YouTube and I realize the YouTuber is using the front camera in a way that the image comes out mirrored. I get into this argument with myself about how a mirrored world doesn’t describe reality properly.

So I’ve acquired a 15hz capable LCD Monitor. Believe it or not this looks better alone than LCD + OSSC with the MSX. OSSC + CRT still looks a bit better to me, but removing the OSSC has also removed some of the noise, which is quite welcome.

Oh, hi! Here’s more random MSX stuff. I finally have a working gamepad. It’s a mega drive / Genesis generic gamepad connected via a pin adapter. Works great!! This is R-Type.

I borrowed an OSSC from a friend to try with the MSX2. Boy, looks glorious. This is Treasure of Usas. I still need to figure out the gamepad solution. Non of my gamepads work well with the adapter I got. But so far I’m enjoying every minute.

My Japanese MSX2 lives!Finally I got the combination to test it. Power supply, pico flash cart. I need to try it with a crt monitor, but the output right now is a single composite cable for video, so I still have that to figure out and also a gamepad solution. @riksrandomretro.com you’re the best!

Currently walking around Lisbon, went in a mall and was surprised to see there were 2 big media stores. A Fnac and a Worten, both fully loaded with latest tech, video game consoles and still some media. It’s so cool to see that. Found the recent release of the spectrum in both of them, so cool!

Something else I got in this trip. A used Rog Ally. Got it at CEX, I could’ve gotten it on eBay for a bit less, but they have a 5 year warranty that I gladly payed extra for. I’ve been slowly digging into my steam, epic and gog library and checking out what works the best on it.

It’s such a nice video card. An ATI HD 4850, single slot with a heavy copper cooler. It wasn’t feeling very well so I tried a cooler with more airflow. I might try swapping the caps on it but it probably just suffers from ATIs natural unreliability. I’m putting it’s original cooler back on now.

Has anybody had any experience with the Hikari hk-915 desoldering station? I'd love to get the Hakko Fr-301, but it costs 4x more than this here so I'm looking for an alternative.
