Videogames as an artform have a problem with nostalgia. Not that people shouldn’t have nostalgia. Or that games shouldn’t draw from the past. But instead the weight we give to nostalgia.

When people go back to enjoy old games, we assume it’s a nostalgia thing. Do people assume that with books? Or movies? Or music? People certainly do go back in time with those mediums for nostalgia! It happens! I know when my sister is listening to certain cheesy old boyband pop or punk she’s often having a musical nostalgia trip! That’s cool! But we still don’t ASSUME, CONSTANTLY thats why people go back to stuff.

People like old stuff because it’s cool and interesting. It’s historic. People go watch Metropolis still, but how many people alive could even be nostalgic for a movie like that?

I almost want to see the word Nostalgia excised from discussions about video games – not because nostalgia is bad but because we over use it to the point where it’s actually harmful I think.

I mean I made IWBTG and am making an NES style game right now and even for me, the obsession with ‘nostalgia’ seems crazy.

Old stuff is cool. I know this because I see a lot of you kids on my tumblr feed talking about games I know you didn’t grow up with. It’s like finding your parents record or CD collection. Thinking the primary greatness of old games is bringing back memories of eating cereal and playing games on a saturday morning is a great injustice, even if those memories for some are perfectly worthwhile things.

A purple dragon-dog rogue opens a chest in the labyrinth to find… piles of gold inside!
“Alright, let’s count this loot—?!”
Suddenly, enchanted strings shoot forth from above, ensnaring the rogue’s wrists and pulling them back from the chest. From the darkness emerges a purple sheep, wearing a crimson dress and carrying… two puppet-string braces?

“Hello, thief~ You’ve got great timing! I really wanted to test my new toys on a new toy~”

Using her newfound control over the intruder, the witch makes the rogue play with his chest for her amusement.
“Hehe, nice tits, doll! Squeeze, squeeze…”
“H-hey!! Knock it off! All I have to do is cut these strings, and then you’ll be—…”

A string connects with Kitt’s head, and her thoughts are suddenly cut short. The witch laughs, summoning a pair of spectral scissors…
“Oh, silly thief… if your strings were cut, I’d just have to get them restrung! And before that, well… wanna see what happens~? Here…”

With a decisive snip, the rogue’s head lolls forward, mindless and obedient. Stripped of their clothes, their new mistress gives them a wooden blade in mockery of their previous adventuring role.
“Hehehe! How fun!! Now I can play “thief” too! En guarde!”
June uses the braces to control Kitt’s movement, and his body responds limply, landing in the desired pose like a simple puppet on strings.
“…”
“Let’s play adventurer, dolly! We’ll just need to find someone to play with…”

Gaming chat app Discord has suffered another user data breach, with a suspected 1 million email addresses stolen alongside (potentially many more) user IDs and IP addresses. While Discord was not targeted directly, third party security service Double Counter have reported a "deliberate, multi-stage attack" wherein hackers spent nearly six hours poking around their infrastructure before the vulnerability was closed.

Double Counter essentially acts as a bouncer bot for Discord servers, promising to detect and block unsanctioned alt accounts and prevent hostile 'raids' by large groups of malicious users. While its efficacy in that mission is debated by Discord users, and the service has previously been accused of selling user data for revenue, the fact is that Double Counter can collect and store personal info of the users that visit its 'protected' servers. Info that, now, has been partly or entirely nicked by Internet miscreants.

By Double Counter’s own estimates, around 1 million user email addresses have been affected, with databases of Discord IDs, usernames, IP addresses, and even location info for up to 28 million users also "partly" copied by the hackers. Security breach trackers Have I Been Pwned further report that 275,000 of the pinched emails and usernames have since been posted publicly.
