Arrived in Japan and had wasabi (the mass produced stuff in supermarkets and kaiten sushi). Said “oh, this is horse radish!” and immediately got shouted down. Years later, cue the morning news shows all clutching their pearls at the news that supermarket wasabi is just horse radish dyed green.
