Magritte highlights the difference between reality and representation. A picture of a pipe can’t be stuffed with tobacco or smoked. It challenges how we confuse words, images, and reality. The text contradicts what we see, forcing us to question perception.

"Ceci n'est pas une pipe" is the famous text written on René Magritte’s 1929 painting "The Treachery of Images". It’s not an actual pipe, it’s a painting of a pipe. The image is a symbol, not the object itself.

The framing effect is a cognitive bias whereby a person's preferences in a decision problem depend on how their frame is presented. Framing effects on an individual's preferences can be compared to the effects of perspective on sensory perception of a phenomenon.

The Framing theory establishes that frames are responsible for defining the context shown in the media regarding news. Basically, they apply an interpretation process that determines our understanding of the world we live in.

And that's how you end up knowing that Montoya exists, but not necessarily why. Hero? Villain? Influencer? MP? Guilty of something? It doesn't matter. The point is that he's in the conversation.

When a name as “Montoya” is in the news every day, we start to believe it is important. It doesn't matter if what is said is true or relevant. What matters is the relevance that the mass media gives to the issue.

Agenda setting is a theory of communication that argues that the media have a strong influence when it comes to determining the issues that are considered important by the citizens.

Why is everyone talking about Montoya if no one knows who he is? Welcome to the magic of agenda setting.

After doing a little experiment, we were able to realize that traditional media is setting the agenda in a big way for international news. Whereas, for national and regional news, we were not able to detect strong patterns. ✅📝🧐❌

Thus, stating that social networks have changed our agenda would not be a complete fair assertion. Nevertheless, from my point of view, only reading what can be fit in 120 characters or an Instagram post does narrow our abilities to analyse, criticise and deepen our agenda.

Furthermore, it is interesting to analyse this phenomenon through Manuel Castells' point of view, as he adds social networks to the equation, which as we saw in class, is a common media by which young people get their information from, even though the outlets behind are still traditional newspapers.

Because of this we have to ask ourselves: from what channels do we inform ourselves? What newspapers do we read? Who are the people behind those articles? Where does the money come from?

The Agenda-Setting Theory might have originated at the end of the 60's decade. However, the idea that it proposes seems like it was written yesterday: the agenda by which we view our world is set by communications media.

The audience has evolved toward a relentless search for entertainment, completely forgetting any political aspects that affect their daily lives. This has generated great perversions such as violent pornography. The series Adolescens is an examole of this fenomena.

Today, public opinion is hijacked by an overdose of fake news, with no fixed anchor. The spiral of silence drowns out dissenting voices, while noise and misinformation dictate the truth. #FakeNews #Reflection

Thus, extremists believes are always in our society. However, due to the Spiral of Silence, they do not arise until they know they are strong enough to do so. And then, it is late for those who opose to them, as a majority has already started to form.

Isn't quite scary to think that some opinions are not shared because those who think them know that they are part of a minority?

It's common to think that the power of individuals is minimal compared to the powerful who govern us. Thinking this way can be dangerous for democracy and its continuity; we need to be aware of this.

It is curious how ideas relates to social progess, such as universal suffrage and women's suffrage in politics arise at different times in countries around the world that are not so far from each others and are more similar than they appear

In October the 30th of 1938, Orson Welles performed on the Air a radio adaption of the novel "The War of the Worlds". Many listeners tuned in late, missing the introduction that stated it was a fictional play. A lot of people panicked, believing that the U.S. was under attack by aliens.

Jane Addams was one of these unknown authors who played an important role in the founding of the Chicago school. Journalist, sociologist, activist and feminist among other professions, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her important activism.

There are many authors that come to mind when we think of the founders of the Chicago school, but there are few women authors that we really know and were as important as them.

As R. Park stated, Chicago was a "social laboratory" since its cultural diversity let sociologists analyse how different cultures could associate with one another harmoniously. It is quite difficult to believe, but there were American intellectuals who valued the diversity that immigration offered.

Sean Illing's article says that the Frankfurt School's critical theory explains Trump's rise. Thinkers like Adorno warned about mass media manipulation, authoritarianism, and how capitalism fosters irrationality. Their insights reveal how fear, propaganda, and cultural decay shape modern politics.

Yuval Noah Harari said about communication: "Sapiens can cooperate in extremely flexible ways with countless numbers of strangers. That’s why Sapiens rule the world, whereas ants eat our leftovers and chimps are locked up in zoos and research laboratories".

According to Harold Lasswell's Model (1948), the effect that a message has in the receivers must be what we put our eye on, since it is key to understand why some messages are deliberately created. Both then, and now, in 2025.

As Émile Durkheim states, society and the morality that defines it are created around symbols that represent its members and their relationships in an allegorical way. Thus, the totem that defines an unworldly society is just the representation of the real world and its individuals.
