What/where is/was this glorious bit of the future they stole from us? It looks like it belongs in a lost northern version of Radio On.

Yeah, I think that definitely comes into play . All part of the (post '60s) reconfiguration of social norms and cultural habits, shifting towards the informal (where social capital is what you know) and the long cultural shadow of Habitat.
5 people dining al fresco, french style, somewhere in continental Europe, reproduced from the 1977-78 Habitat catalogue in Ben Highmore, Lifestyle Revolution.

The colours in the photo are poor but it bears a resemblance to the flags used by Spanish Republicans.

‘Power Music...said “everyone is entitled to their opinion”, ’. When your corporate brand is petulant teenager who knows they have lost the argument.
A "Top of the Pops" album showing a woman in a red leotard and matching hat to distract from the fact this was an album of lacklustre re-recorded covers not a compilation of the actual chart songs.

The avenging mermaid for people who borrow books and don't return them?

I have had the opportunity recently to read through old copies of Moss Side News, which was put out by a group campaigning round slum clearance to the south of here in the late 60's/early 70's (Greenhays/north Moss Side, I don't know the whole story but many terraces survive in Moss Side).
A page from a community new magazine with a map showing proposed slum clearance in Greenhays/Moss Side in south Manchester. This went ahead in the early 70's.

The entrance was in the grounds of the substation(picture: www.atomica.co.uk/guardian/). It seems to have been demolished(archive.is/1Mjkf) though this might be a new cap (maps.app.goo.gl/Jq4HSKiXNNtC...):
Nondescript low brick structure behind a fence in the grounds of a substation. It might cover the entrance to a (secret) tunnel. Taken from a screenshot of Google Maps street view.

Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester used to have this outside complete with sign "This is not a climbing frame"
A sculpture made of a 3D grid of white metal tubes amid some trees. It looks just like a climbing frame at first glance.

Perhaps less 'gives up' more 'not allowed to'. Neatley parallels the real world changes.
A maps showing the crease in how far children, aged 8, were allowed to by themselves across four generations. For the great-grandfather in 1919 it was six miles, for the grand-father in 1950 one mile, for the mother in 1979 hlaf a mile, for the son, in the current day 300 yards to the end of the street.

They are often cooked with other fruit: apples, pears etc. dd them to a pie or crumble. The seeds are high in pectin so you can add them to jams. This is what Jane Grigson has to say about them:

A nice bit of presumably 1970's design. The book is Colin Ward and Anthony Fyson's Streetwork: The Exploding School written in capacity as the education officers for The Town & Country Planning Association. All very much of the era.
A label from inside a former library book. It has a UWIST logo in blue ink in distinctive rectangular type very redolent of 1970's design.

I found my self, to my surprise, at the end of a video the Guardian linked to. It was fun showing the kid.

It's also important to note the methodology. There has been a significant change in employment patterns over this period: in 1984 ecomonmic participation for men was 88.8% for women 62.8%. The figures now are 83.7% and 74.2% This shift likely had an impact. www.ons.gov.uk/economy/nati...
A explantion of how the figures in the chart posted above were derived. It says that median income was calculated across the full population for young adults ie. not only for those in employment.

#proofOfCat This is a picture of me, as a cat. Did a bang-up job of capturing the salient features. This is definitely me.
A portrait of me as a cat, drawn by a child. Note curly mustache, braids, round glasses, stripy top. It really does look like me.
