But I see a lot of these guys having a, "Oh I can finally do the thing that was always too hard for me," and it looks ridiculous to me because the only thing really ever stopping them or me was the time to read the papers and write the code.

I think one benefit of growing up in the generalist startup environment as a programmer, though, is exactly that I never do feel like a known programming task is a "Can't do that." I learned the hard way to not do that in a startup. Just saying, "Yeah, at xyz cost," has served me as a programmer.

It's actually not too bad, some of these are features I *could* save for v2, but I'd rather not after sitting here running the thing 257949 times already myself to test it.

Aside from ultimately caving to I need to do animations for all of Tarski's axioms and Book 1 propositions and Proclus, also planning on more language support (localization/IME), optional history tracking and special lists, and more accessibility support.

I'm kinda guilty on my Euclid project of keeping adding more things despite how well I've planned out a v1 completion route lol. I keep defending it because it feels incomplete without some things lol.

Corporate jobs have done an absolute disservice for some people. Specialization has its own benefits and shit, but some of these guys have never actually done the work of owning an entire complex project and are absolutely mystified by AI in part because of that.

Yeah, I never went through the phase of programmer where my job was defined as sitting down and doing one task someone assigned me for hours lmfao. First pro job was in a startup, so being a generalist and understanding the domain was always immediately the job when I got in. The code was the means.

Check out this article by my amazing graduate student Abby Cramer! She identifies the links between today’s techbro eugenics and that of 20th c. eugenist Paul Popenoe, an early supporter of eugenic sterilization who became a marriage counselor to ensure “high quality” produced lots of offspring.

"What if the AI companies continue being irresponsibly incompetent and their bots start attacking important infrastructure?!" Idk, man, why the fuck aren't they going to jail??? Literally everyone else goes to jail for exactly that. You're asking the wrong fucking questions.
000
Subaru Vagabond @subaruvagabond.com · 6h
And the constant, "Even the experts don't know how they work!" To which I'm constantly sitting here like, "Literally, **I** know how they work more than you're claiming experts do? Someone sold you some bullshit, man."
010
Subaru Vagabond @subaruvagabond.com · 6h
And it just shows in everything. They latch onto the newest models and the newest benchmarks without a single fucking critical thought in their damn heads, demanding we'll all fall behind if we don't join them. Like a bunch of fucking lemmings claiming they know anything.

Subaru Vagabond @subaruvagabond.com · 6h
The expertise thing, man. It's definitely because I've got over 15 years of experience working with everything that led up to the current AI craze while all the chuds were circle jerking to React or whatever, and I still consider that basically nothing as I'm getting my MS in it now.

Subaru Vagabond @subaruvagabond.com · 6h
A **damn good** place to start is to actually read to even demonstrable barely understanding instead of just making up shit that's not even true about the writing of experts.

Subaru Vagabond @subaruvagabond.com · 6h
Something about if you want to bring attention to yourself in an established field without looking like a fucking grifter, you should probably start with humbling yourself and respecting the established experts for what they bring, not brush them off because they don't fit your myopic mindset.

Subaru Vagabond @subaruvagabond.com · 6h
This shits been bugging me lately because I try to be exact about where any such expertise I do or don't have is, and it's already leaps and bounds above anything any of these "we're so nuanced" chuds can claim, but they're claiming it anyway

Subaru Vagabond @subaruvagabond.com · 6h
it's honestly a kind of rank anti- intellectualism all the fucking AI bros are pushing right now

AI are probably the least qualified motherfuckers as "nuanced" about the subject whatsoever.

So many of the experts are celebrating their membership in the eugenist fascism club in public, I can't just appeal to authority of expertise easily, but honestly, programmers who aren't included in experts and who are absorbed in a culture of making jokes about losing touch with reality while using

But also, if I looked, it's probably the only way to do the scenario engine that I could even think of still lol Problem is the damn points that I have entire notes to myself that I don't like that much and keep adding to every time I come across it again lol
000
Subaru Vagabond @subaruvagabond.com · 19h
Been burying myself in accessibility and localization/sqlite stuff for it. Do I remember anything about how the scenario engine technically works? Fuck no. I literally don't remember. But it works.

Subaru Vagabond @subaruvagabond.com · 19h
I have to remind myself sometimes, at 250k lines of code, what it even does. But it's kinda easy because idk if I know any other way to do some of the things and have it work anything like this lol

Subaru Vagabond @subaruvagabond.com · 19h
I have really learned a lot about graphics programming lol. I have kept like doing one thing and then jumping to another without exploring any more than my attempt and some lit on like 1-2 other methods lol. I feel stupid about it all. But I know why Euclid does what it does.

I really went raylib->stb/raylib->stb/harfbuzz/raylib->stb/harfbuzz/sdl_gpu->FreeType/harfbuzz/sdl_gpu before being happy. Could use more shader based rendering yet if I wanted to go further, but it's nice as is.
000
Subaru Vagabond @subaruvagabond.com · 21h
Updating to a direct FreeType/Harfbuzz pipeline for font rendering was so worth it. It looked okay in most OSs before but just awful on Linux, and now it looks even better in all 3 OSs.

Like I think my first question for an old guy who even raised concern about cannabis use disorder would be like, "Have you considered, who fucking cares?"
001
Subaru Vagabond @subaruvagabond.com · 21h
Oh yeah, the group was 65+ year olds using cannabis. Honestly, if the worst fucking thing in these old farts' life is they spend too much time getting high and would rather be getting high when they're not, I seriously could not give a fuck less, this is ridiculous.
100
Subaru Vagabond @subaruvagabond.com · 22h
"1/6 of this group of cannabis users are addicted to it oh no!!" Okay, how bad? "Well, 76% are mild at most." Okay ... And what qualifies for mild here? "The most commonly met CUD criteria were time spent obtaining/using/recovering (74.4%), craving (67.5%), and tolerance (48.3%)." fucking lol

Silicon Valley’s Obsession With AI Looks a Lot Like Religion
The tech world’s obsession with artificial intelligence has spawned beliefs and rituals that resemble religion — complete with digital deities, moral codes, and threats of damnation.

This isn't fair. I'm doing ETLs in SQL in one class and ETLs in Python in the other class at the same time.

Lotta people already got Barnum effect from that, too, but man, tech bros keep trying really hard to be loved with shit everyone fucking hates.
000
Subaru Vagabond @subaruvagabond.com · 03/10/2026
The paranoia was already based in a very real thing that they never actually needed *that much* information to make predictions that have especially Barnum-accurate results.

Paranoid people: "They're recording everything and sending it to the server!" Companies: "That's ridiculous, we're definitely not doing that." *Few years later* Companies: "Unless....... We'll even make little specific devices just for it!"

Subaru Vagabond @subaruvagabond.com · 03/10/2026
There are very clear exceptions lol. For the others, at some point the weak defenses fall flat for me when you're trying to sell anti-AI shit while using AI a lot in it. That's a weird contradiction. More interested in perspectives of people who have jobs requiring them to use it than self choice.

Subaru Vagabond @subaruvagabond.com · 03/10/2026
Every anti AI or even just critical AI person on YouTube these days is either making really weak arguments of why they use it for creative content anyway or selling fucking crypto wallets too. Like man, that place kinda sucks.

2 letters off the truth of all them, though, so it'd be fun if they actually pushed it in that wording, for the parody

Now I'm scared I just made a prediction that someone's gonna sell a fucking AI Scrum workflow.
100
Subaru Vagabond @subaruvagabond.com · 03/10/2026
I would be surprised because I see a bunch of more experienced programmers immediately rub against the whole spec driven shit as we've seen that before but not having done any of the reading to know how to critique it or point to anything else at all lol. Our own field discussed this shit already 😭
100
Subaru Vagabond @subaruvagabond.com · 03/10/2026
Go read the 2 Sutherland books, name yourself product owner and scrum master, and feed tickets into the AI, doing the whole scrum breakdown and everything that experienced programmers are good at already. It'd be smarter than what some of the spec driven bros are pushing you.
100
Subaru Vagabond @subaruvagabond.com · 03/10/2026
This spec driven development is just a fucking new way of describing waterfall, still. I see people get it every once in a while, but lotta people trying to make a buck pushing it like it's new. You can apply scrum to your vibecoding the same fucking ways, just different process. 🙄

Subaru Vagabond @subaruvagabond.com · 03/10/2026
A lot of people amazed at these silly little benchmarks and tests like multiplying large numbers, but they conveniently love to ignore all the fucking analyses and benchmarks about maintainable, complex code that shows AI code sucks absolute ass still lol
000
Subaru Vagabond @subaruvagabond.com · 03/10/2026
There are people who have, well, I don't always agree with them for reasons, but there's like good faith people talking about AI, and then there's the bros who picked it up in February and are having an existential crisis because machine talk back.

Native American Tribes Came Together to Secure Their Rights to Colorado River Water. Four States Are Stalling the Deal.
Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming are resisting the deal because it would allow the Navajo and Hopi to lease water to cities downstream, likely the growing towns around Phoenix.

It's honestly fucking bizarre as hell to me to assume people don't know the current AI well in a world where colleges are requiring AI literacy classes and employers are demanding AI use by employees. Like, you actually sound like the out of touch one.

There's a utopian novel where men were bred out of existence by a eugenics regime, but idk if this one exists yet. 🤷
