A unicorn, hair cut and horn removed, dolled up in bows and lace and impaled with a carousel pole. I did a painting similar to this about eight years ago but wanted to push the idea further and make it more graphic, and I'm pleased with the results. The idea is sort of a metaphor for forced repression of one's true self — a magical creature, bound and battered and reduced to a carnival ride.

Why do my days always end up like this... She was fluttering around our basement of all places (???) and now I'm waiting on a call back from a wildlife guy near me for the cut on her face (if my cat did it, she needs antibiotics) Gonna have to keep an eye on the cat for flu but bird looks healthy.

At the time of posting the chili has been simmering with the lid ajar for about an hour. I recently added the spices - everything is to taste and I tend to just coast by on vibes. It'll probably be ready to eat in like 20 minutes? Just need the veggies to get tender! Spice list in the alt text!

Chicken bouillon powder (I didn't have beef), salt, pepper, MSG, paprika, chili powder, and a variety of herbs that I had on hand that seemed like they might be okay. Also a splash of soy sauce and a squirt of maple syrup - but not too much! The vegetables get the chili sweet enough!

Once the vegetables were done cooking everything got added to the pot and mixed together. This is where I took a risk!!! At the advice of a friend I added lentils and some extra water! Everything is now simmering together on medium heat. After it's cooked for 45 minutes, I'll add SPICES!!!

Meat, tomato and beans dumped into the pot, covering the rainbow assortment of vegetables and creating a lovely visual metaphor for how all the meaty, beany, tomatoful goodness makes you forget that it's packed to the gills with nutrients.

Oop, nevermind. THERE'S the vegetables :)

A sack of green lentils. When i tried my buddy's chili the lentils didn't add to the flavor but they gave the entire thing that much more body! Here I used a bit over half the bag.

Everything mixed together with about four cups of water. I'll add more if the lentils need it.

The canned ingredients came next! While the vegetables cooked I put together everything that would get tossed into the pot next. Tomatoes, green chiles and beans! Details in the alt text :D I use EXTRA tomato paste in this recipe because the added veggies can dilute the tomato-y flavor!

A 28-ounce can of whole tomatoes (squeezed into bite-sized chunks), two 6-ounce cans of tomato paste, and 12 ounces of canned mild green chiles.

One can of dark red kidney beans and one can of chickpeas, which isn't a bean you see often in chili but the texture is amazing.

Once the meat was all browned it was removed from the pot. There wasn't much fat left so I added a stick of butter, and then in went the vegetables to cook on high heat until they turned soft.

The butter browned before I tossed everything in and I don't think that will add to the flavor but like... it won't make anything WORSE.

After chopping the vegetables, I took a nice big pork chop and cut it into small chunks and added it, plus two pounds of ground beef, into a hot oiled pot. I'm using my stock pot bc this is a BIG batch of chili. Make sure to keep up with the alt text!

Hey, I haven't done a cooking thread in AGES but I've decided to make chili tonight and I've been taking photos of my steps, so HEY LET'S TALK ABOUT RAINBOW CHILI Mine is chock-full of vegetables and fiber, and it's less spicy and more sweet! I started with vegetables -- list is in the alt text!

A medley of two onions, three carrots, one zucchini, half a red bell pepper and half a yellow bell pepper, all chopped coarsely, as well as a heaping tablespoon of jarred garlic because I'm not too pretentious to use a shortcut like that.

I have a two year old. Nanalan' is his FAVORITE tv show EVER. I was initially horrified by this, but am perhaps further horrified to slowly realize that this show is actually BRILLIANT as far as kids tv goes, and I have many reasons to feel this way. I will not elaborate, however. Look at her.

Kicking myself back into art by doodling concepts for a project I might pursue gradually throughout the next year or two.

A study on drawing and stylizing reindeer. Most of these are various concept sketches for Rudolph himself, except for the round-faced calf at the bottom, which was a concept doodle for Donner.
