This dog would refuse to go out in the rain when we adopted him 18 months ago & would actively pull away from any body of water He was fear aggressive towards other dogs Now he’ll sit quietly under a table in a busy cafe with other dogs around And go on a boat #photoaday #dogs #staffy #rescuedogs

A peaceful sunset on the coast #photoaday #photooftheday #sunset
A photo of a lady taking a photo
She is silhouetted against the sea and sky at sunset
The moon and the sun are both glowing and make it look like the twin suns of Tatooine from Star Wars
Pointing this out spoiled the romance of the moment according to the lady

My Dad always slathered everything in Daddies Brown Sauce (what that said about Mum’s cooking…) But my Gramps always, always had the exotic (to me) HP Fruity Sauce Have to try and source/sauce some now I think and relive those childhood memories

A sadly no longer with us grandmother had many indiscreet euphemisms that she would happily use in public, chief among them “she looks a bit Claire Balding” Another favourite of hers; “saw some urban looking lads hanging around the shops, probably up to no good” 😬

Going back through some photos from the year; this one was whilst walking the Monsal Trail as part of our Miles for MS fundraising. The dog is wearing his MS Trust bandana. Mrs B is on an electric trike that we hired so that she could cover the distance. #photoaday #dogs #MS #multiplesclerosis

Cool. I’ve been playing Dave the Diver for a while and was very surprised to find a race of “sea people” who all get addicted to a card game; there’s a mini version of Balatro in there to spend your time playing them all at it.

Sat peacefully minding my own business at a cafe when suddenly Daves’ lycra bulge appears and looks like it’s about to stir my coffee. That’s my issue with it. Pop a pair of looser shorts over the lycra when you stop for snacks lads please?

The streets around Mercato Centrale are full of stalls offering a variety of leather goods and clothing. To be honest not many are of decent quality. But it lends a bustling atmosphere to the area. #florence #photoaday
Street stalls offering cheap leather and knockoffs. They are bustling and noisy places which I enjoy walking through but do not buy from.

A typical street in medieval Florence. The overhanging upper floors are the telltale signs. During this time there were taxes based on the size of the groundfloor of the building and taxes throughout history create incentives for people to avoid or mitigate them. #florence #photoaday
A narrow street in medieval Florence. The upper floors overhang the street from n large stone supports, corbels, lending a feeling of a looming presence above you at street level.

Whatever it is that you were doing or thinking, Dante is disappointed in you. That’s what I always imagine when passing this bust that is on an elevated shelf on the outside of his house in medieval Florence. I love the tight little streets around here. #florence #photoaday

Family having cocktails at Loggia Roof Bar in Santo Spirito. Myself, my wife, our two sons, and their partners. I like that the sun blurs us all and adds a slightly dreamlike quality to the image. Or maybe that was the negronis. 📸 is my sons #photoaday #florence #family
Four cool young people and two not so cool middle aged people are sitting around a table on the roof terrace of a bar in Santo Spirito.

This is my favourite bar in Piazza Santo Spirito. Pitta M’ingolli is always a good place for light plates, something to drink & the perfect spot for people watching. If the boards are hanging outside then it’s table service, if not then go & order at the counter. #photoaday #florence
A typical neighbourhood bar.
Caffe e cornetto la mattina, panino à pranzo, cocktail à sera.
Perfetto!

What I need in the morning. There are many cafes & bars in Florence where you will get an excellent coffee but Cafe Gilli is the oldest (1733) & it is a beautiful place. It is pricey if you sit down as a tourist but “un caffe al banco” will cost you just €1.50. 📸 is mine #photoaday #florence

I’ve just turned 50, but when I’m properly grown up I aspire to dress as classily as the gentleman in this photo. Taken in Santo Spirito, Florence. 📸 is mine #photoaday #florence
A well dressed older man walking down a Florentine side street wearing a blue blaxer, with a bright blue shirt, olive trousers and brown shoes.
The details of his sunglasses, hat and turned up cuffs of the jacket demonstrates the care he takes of and respect he has for himself.

Bistecca alla Fiorentina at Antico Ristoro di Cambi in San Frediano, Florence. Just the most simple & amazing food, meat like butter. Order one to share with a nice Chianti & enjoy this splendid restaurant. (Yes those are normal size roast potatoes in the background) 📸 is mine #photoaday #florence
1.3kg of Chianina beef cooked rare (you will not get it cooked any other way). Served on a huge wooden plate with salt, olive oil and rosemary. The deep pink flesh is the softest and most flavourful meat you can eat.
Apologies to any vegetarians.
(It is genuinely tough to find a vegetarian restaurant in Florence)

Oltrano. I love that this side of the river you get the more relaxed and carefree feel of Florence, which is a nice contrast to the grandiosity of the historic centre. 📸 is mine #photoaday #florence

In the logistics world lots of firms have convinced themselves that they can do away with experience and knowledge because “AI” and that any Tom, Dick or Sally can now deliver around cities or remote rural areas with a bit of software. Sure, you can deliver to that school at 3pm but is it wise…? 🤷‍♂️

One of the “Prisoners” - an unfinished or practice sculpture by Michelangelo. The Academia does a good job of displaying these in the hall leading to the David and it really helps you to understand how the artist worked. A must visit in Florence. 📸 is mine #photoaday #florence

Dante being all dramatic in the dark. I love this statue that stands right outside the Basilica di Santa Croce in Florence. Make sure you say hello to him. 📸 is mine #photoaday #florence
The night is dark. A bright white statue of Dante, two lions sitting at the base of his plinth, stands in front of the white, pink and green facade of the Church of Santa Croce. It all looks very dramatic.

This is the Torre dei Belfredelli, a Medieval tower in Oltrano, Florence, just two minutes walk from Ponte Vecchio. I’ve always liked this building but have never been inside. It surprises you as you don’t see it coming from your perspective at street level. 📸 is mine #photoaday #florence
A seven storey tower in Oltrano, Florence that is mostly covered with green vines. It contrasts with the nearby buildings and although it is taller than them all you don’t notice it until you are right by it due to your perspective.

Interior of the Basilica of San Lorenzo, Florence. From the exterior it looks unfinished and the interior is certainly less opulent than many others in the city, but I think it’s rather wonderful. There’s a grace to it and the whole complex is worth visiting. 📸 is mine #photoaday #florence
The understated and graceful grey and cream colours inside San Lorenzo are a contrast to many others churches in the city of Florence but I really like this one from an aesthetic point of view.
Symmetry and simplicity.

Some of the many stunning globes that are on display in Museo Galileo. This brilliant little museum is just around the corner (on the river side) from the Uffizi and is well worth an hour or so of your time. 📸 is mine #photoaday #florence
Antique globes artfully lit in their display cases in the Galileo Museum in Florence. They appear to loom out of the dark shadows and are lit like the sun is shining its light onto the top of the lower ones and the underside of the one on a higher shelf.

This is the central courtyard of Palazzo Pitti, just through the main entrance. You can see a fountain atop the wall, with a grotto below, and that is where the Boboli gardens begin. The Palace and gardens are a fantastic visit, 5 minutes stroll from Ponte Vecchio. 📸 is mine #photoaday #florence
Sunlight makes the sandy stone glow in the palace courtyard. A handful of visitors early in the day are visible, some hidden in the dark of the grotto below the fountain. The elevated gardens (the palace and grounds are on the side of a hill) lead up to a blue sky.

The Medici balls. The family crest is everywhere in the city (this one is on a tomb in the Medici Chapel). Look around when in Florence and see just how often you spot them. What is the symbolism? Nobody really knows, but the balls probably represent coins. 📸 is mine #photoaday #florence
Upon a jade marble background a yellow oval holds six raised balls, five of them red and one blue.
