This dog would refuse to go out in the rain when we adopted him 18 months ago & would actively pull away from any body of water He was fear aggressive towards other dogs Now he’ll sit quietly under a table in a busy cafe with other dogs around And go on a boat #photoaday #dogs #staffy #rescuedogs

A peaceful sunset on the coast #photoaday #photooftheday #sunset
A photo of a lady taking a photo
She is silhouetted against the sea and sky at sunset
The moon and the sun are both glowing and make it look like the twin suns of Tatooine from Star Wars
Pointing this out spoiled the romance of the moment according to the lady

The streets around Mercato Centrale are full of stalls offering a variety of leather goods and clothing. To be honest not many are of decent quality. But it lends a bustling atmosphere to the area. #florence #photoaday
Street stalls offering cheap leather and knockoffs. They are bustling and noisy places which I enjoy walking through but do not buy from.

A typical street in medieval Florence. The overhanging upper floors are the telltale signs. During this time there were taxes based on the size of the groundfloor of the building and taxes throughout history create incentives for people to avoid or mitigate them. #florence #photoaday
A narrow street in medieval Florence. The upper floors overhang the street from n large stone supports, corbels, lending a feeling of a looming presence above you at street level.

Whatever it is that you were doing or thinking, Dante is disappointed in you. That’s what I always imagine when passing this bust that is on an elevated shelf on the outside of his house in medieval Florence. I love the tight little streets around here. #florence #photoaday

Family having cocktails at Loggia Roof Bar in Santo Spirito. Myself, my wife, our two sons, and their partners. I like that the sun blurs us all and adds a slightly dreamlike quality to the image. Or maybe that was the negronis. 📸 is my sons #photoaday #florence #family

This is my favourite bar in Piazza Santo Spirito. Pitta M’ingolli is always a good place for light plates, something to drink & the perfect spot for people watching. If the boards are hanging outside then it’s table service, if not then go & order at the counter. #photoaday #florence
A typical neighbourhood bar.
Caffe e cornetto la mattina, panino à pranzo, cocktail à sera.
Perfetto!

What I need in the morning. There are many cafes & bars in Florence where you will get an excellent coffee but Cafe Gilli is the oldest (1733) & it is a beautiful place. It is pricey if you sit down as a tourist but “un caffe al banco” will cost you just €1.50. 📸 is mine #photoaday #florence

Bistecca alla Fiorentina at Antico Ristoro di Cambi in San Frediano, Florence. Just the most simple & amazing food, meat like butter. Order one to share with a nice Chianti & enjoy this splendid restaurant. (Yes those are normal size roast potatoes in the background) 📸 is mine #photoaday #florence
1.3kg of Chianina beef cooked rare (you will not get it cooked any other way). Served on a huge wooden plate with salt, olive oil and rosemary. The deep pink flesh is the softest and most flavourful meat you can eat.
Apologies to any vegetarians.

One of the “Prisoners” - an unfinished or practice sculpture by Michelangelo. The Academia does a good job of displaying these in the hall leading to the David and it really helps you to understand how the artist worked. A must visit in Florence. 📸 is mine #photoaday #florence

Interior of the Basilica of San Lorenzo, Florence. From the exterior it looks unfinished and the interior is certainly less opulent than many others in the city, but I think it’s rather wonderful. There’s a grace to it and the whole complex is worth visiting. 📸 is mine #photoaday #florence
The understated and graceful grey and cream colours inside San Lorenzo are a contrast to many others churches in the city of Florence but I really like this one from an aesthetic point of view.
Symmetry and simplicity.

Sunlight makes the sandy stone glow in the palace courtyard. A handful of visitors early in the day are visible, some hidden in the dark of the grotto below the fountain. The elevated gardens (the palace and grounds are on the side of a hill) lead up to a blue sky.

The Medici balls. The family crest is everywhere in the city (this one is on a tomb in the Medici Chapel). Look around when in Florence and see just how often you spot them. What is the symbolism? Nobody really knows, but the balls probably represent coins. 📸 is mine #photoaday #florence

The weird thing is that after a short time in the city you almost stop noticing the enormity of the Duomo. There are so many views of it similar to this, looming over everything as you turn down a street. 📸 is mine #photoaday #florence

Ponte Vecchio late at night, with all the jewellery shops shuttered. Very late or very early are good times with few people around to get an impression of how this medieval bridge looked and felt centuries ago. 📸 is mine #photoaday #florence
A medieval bridge on an inky black night. The small jewellers that line each side of the bridge are shut with the ornate old wooden covers. Flags fly above them. A handful of people are on the far side of the bridge but otherwise this is as empty as you’ll ever see Ponte Vecchio.

The front of Palazzo Vecchio contains, according to local legend, an early 16th Century carving by Michelangelo. On the central brick there is a face in profile, of either a boring senator or a nuisance heckler, but someone who irked the artist. Who knows its veracity? 📸 is mine #photoaday #florence
700 year old sandy brickwork on the Palazzo Vecchio with some 500 year old graffiti/ a carving attributed to the artist Michelangelo.
The carving is clearly a face in profile and is about the size of a hand. It’s not something you’d notice unless it was pointed out to you.
Look for it if you’re in Florence sometime!

Porcellino is the affectionate name for this bronze statue & fountain of a boar (the original stone one is in the Uffizi). He sits in a market square a short walk from Piazza della Signoria. A view from the Loggia dei Lanzi where I like to try different angles. This one is looking down Via della Ninna, which runs between Palazzo Vecchio (left) and the Uffizi (right) with the Vasari Corridor between them. (Do zoom in on the statue - it is magnificent) 📸 is mine #photoaday #florence
Looking up towards the statue “The Rape of Polyxena”
The arch of the Loggia frames the top of the image and is echoed by the arch of the final (or first depending on your direction of travel) part of the Vasari Corridor.
The rougher masonry of the Palazzo Vecchio on the left contrasts with the cleaner lines of the Uffizi on the right.
The whole image is bathed in yellow light and the shadows cast seem to add drama to the statue in the foreground.

From Wikipedia:
The "Rape of Polyxena" refers to the mythological abduction of Trojan Princess Polyxena by Achilles' son, Pyrrhus (Neoptolemus). Following the fall of Troy, she was dragged to Achilles' tomb to be sacrificed in revenge for his death. The event is immortalized in Pio Fedi's masterpiece sculpture at the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence.

Buon Venerdì ! Through the wine window, at Bar Babae in the Santo Spirito area of Florence. If the window is open you can get your drinks through it from the street. You just ring the bell using the chain.
A tiny open working wine window, a bit taller than a large wine glass, the chain to ring the bell hangs in the centre.
Beyond you can see patrons inside the bar and the art on the wall.
This window is usually in operation most afternoons and evenings.
