This is super interesting. I work in marketing & have run a few charities & here's where I landed: A corp gives $10k & spends $20k mktg their generosity. Seems terrible, but the charity is VERY happy to have the $10k & they can use the self-congratulating posts to convince other corps to give.

I'm not so sure this is fully true. Warren Buffet? JP Morgan? Both spent hundreds of millions (perhaps billions) on philanthropy. Musk, Bezos, Zuckerberg… nada. Or, perhaps … imagine how rich JP Morgan could have been if he had Musk-level lack of empathy.
