There are a bunch of ways you could clue players in. Insight check for 'something feels off about this goblin'; rumours; lore dump in a book found on a corpse etc. Or just have the threat be real but not immediately jump to a TPK. Let the players narrowly escape so they can plan, gain xp, etc.

I like the idea of that abstraction but I think I would like there to be rules for playing out-of-character too - scenes in rehearsal, arguments with the director about character motivation, #metoo etc. Otherwise you are just playing a regular fantasy/SF/horror game with easy combat

This gets said constantly, but it worth reiterating: Games Workshop being bigger than fishing is important to shout about because you wouldn't know it from government talking points, which are rarely about anything creative or artistic. Growth won't involve fish or steel, it will involve goblins.
