Here is how Huntsville transit ridership compares to other nearby cities of similar city/metro area size. Knoxville, Birmingham, and Chattanooga all blow Huntsville out of the water when it comes to transit ridership.

We set up a vendor tent today using just 2 bikes and a trailer! A couple of ebikes are a lot more capable for daily life than you may think :)

Street improvements at Big Spring Park are coming along well! Enhanced crossing next to Cozy Cow and an additional raised crossing added too.

This has to be the worst bus stop in the entire city. Who thought this made sense as a bus stop location?????

Another photo. Its park of the big spring park expansion www.huntsvilleal.gov/city-unveils... The raise crosswalk is (potentially) like the one in front of the AC Hotel and Eclipse apartments at 422 Williams Ave SW.

Had a great meetup today in which we talked to the director of midcity, a district which has been built from scratch over the past 10 years to focus on walkability and urban living.

This apartment complex takes up only 1/4th of the land on this block, yet it pays over 6 times as much in property taxes as the rest of the land does. This is why density is so important, it allows cities to generate much more revenue while also using fewer resources.

New median is being added on Church Street at Big Spring Park. It will be lined with trees down the middle.

Signs of a good rental market. Abundant housing means landlords and sellers have to fight to attract customers, helping make housing more affordable.

Here are people in my city watching the NASA Artemis live stream. If only we were all in cars, it would have been a much more social event! Its so funny when twitter users pretend that social gatherings straight up don't exist in modern day.

The PARC project continues to make progress! Once work on the canal is complete, we'll see the sky bridge construction start work.

I was out this morning with my family and a dozen other volunteers to help @tnriverkeeper.bsky.social clean up Pinhook Creek. Its exciting to see the area cleaned up and soon see construction start to strengthen the creek for flood mitigation and also become a bike & pedestrian corridor.

You aren't kidding! I spun my cursor around and picked a place at random. This is a town of under 20k people and there are multiple pedestrian improvements here!

I think broadly its not boring and people care, but I can tell it gets kinda boring and overly technical when I have to explain the difference between the 8 separate residential zoning codes. Thats why part of my pitch to is simplify zoning codes. We don't need 8 separate residential codes!

I was reading a study my city did on the best option for public transit. This page explain why sometimes a bus is simply better than a tram or other options. One isn't better than another, it varies from city to city and road to road.

This section of church street was closed today for Big Spring Jingle and it was a fun time for my family and others! I hope we can get this section of church street permanently closed to car traffic so we can expand the park and make it safer for kids to play.

Seriously though, I've had so many arguments with people who don't understand that millions of people die every year, and most people don't want to flip their parent's house for sale the day after their parents die. Most vacancies have reason, its not a corporate conspiracy!

Some of these places are almost unrecognizable by how much they changed over the course of a decade. Positive change can happen and is actively happening in Huntsville. Lets advocate for more of it!

Huntsville, AL. This was a few days after it snowed, so the road was completely dry, but sidewalks not in direct sunlight stayed icy for several days. It doesn't snow too often down here, so we don't have have a big snow removal budget, but they should at least salt the sidewalks.

Going to google maps, you can see exactly why small painted bike lanes around Huntsville are not effective at protecting cyclists. Bike lanes without a buffer or barrier are little different than no bike lane at all. maps.app.goo.gl/yQcfQWkVurPS...

There has been a lot of work done to improve walkability in the past 6 years. In short, circled is the areas seeing the most amount of mix-used walkable development, greenways, and high quality bike lanes. Primarily downtown, Lowe Mill area, and Stovehouse/campus 805 area.

If you drive from Huntsville to Atlanta, you may have seen this road was redesigned a few years ago. This is by far the worst bike lane I have ever seen. Whats even the point?

Looked into the property tax history of some areas in Huntsville and this was the best example I could find of the lost potential revenue free surface parking creates. This area lost some parking, but now generates an additional $700,000 in yearly revenue.

Went to take photos of the new bike lane and thought "Its nice its buffered, but it being a protected bike lane would be even better. Wonder how I could turn it into a protected bike lane" And then I come up to this. Bike lane is now cleared and now partially protected :P
Bike lane blocked by tree branchBike lane cleared

Huntsville can change and become more pedestrian friendly. We know that because in some parts of the city, it already has. What used to be a large road that was dangerous to cross is now a vibrant street.

Having green spaces or having an urban environment doesn't have to be 2 incompatible choices. An urban space can have a large amount of greenery.
