just gotta say, if you sign up to be an ICE agent and be part of a agency that tears families apart and literally drags people out of their cars and kills people, you can just quit. you can always just quit.

It’s maddening to me because I think closing some schools is a sensible way to begin to come out of this low period. If not that, then what?

I am very proud to be represented in Congress by a Somali-American woman who came to this country as a refugee. But even if I wasn't, Somali people are my neighbors. We already taught the world once: we Minnesotans love our neighbors with our lives.

It’s worse than civility politics, it’s over promote the R candidates but in a way that doesn’t seem to cover the issues or policy positions at all. It is utterly devoid of substance. This incitement is, of course, something the Strib should ask about, should insist on answers/accountability for.

I wonder how nice Lisa Demuth & Michele Tafoya feel about the president inciting a pogrom on my neighbors. Will the Strib political desk look up from its civility politics and push them, noting Demuth effectively invited ICE here before or will they just accept an email from Tafoya’s human shields?

This week marks 9 months since Renée Good was killed by Federal Agents in Minneapolis. As your DFL-endorsed candidate for Hennepin County Attorney, I’ve never danced around this topic, or needed consultants and polling to tell me how to feel.

It’s fine to keep eyes on the polls on your normal travels through the ‘hood. Smile/wave placards that say Vote Today on corners (not too close to polling place tho). But if you haven’t taken a Democracy Defense training, remember your biggest E-Day work might be shooting down rumors & bad ideas.

Show up at the polls w/fluorescent vests & whistles? Cruise around polling place in car, bike or foot? Think how that looks to Jo Median Voter who has never seen that outside their polling place before. Remember how scary the trucks felt during the Uprising? Don’t do initimidators’ work for them.

I know there many earnest folks in Signal/similar groups (+ possibly some bad actors). But it’s important NOT to make things harder for election officials. We’re on your side & have strong systems in place. Think about what your ‘intervention” looks like to a voter who doesn’t know what’s going on.

And the efforts by DFL party and other recognized election watchers are very well organized and effective at what they do (within legal proscriptions). No need for vigilante-style self-help here.

Getting reports of bad election ideas in Signal groups. Defend democracy by shooting these down. No, you can’t show up at a precinct & be a challenger/observer. Those must be appointed by a party, nonpartisan campaign or ballot initiative. Letter must be accepted by officials. No letter, out you go.

Probably correct. It’s not that I think she should get a pass, but methinks some of this must have to do with police/mayor relationship politics. Also, I am inclined to be highly skeptical of a suit by a male police chief for sex’l harassment (I worked 42 years in a male-dominated profession).

I’m not sure I’ve ever heard of any AG that actually tries cases in that role. The job is so much bigger than that.

Hadn’t clicked that Southwest Tire & Auto at 50th & Xerxes pointedly flies the old Minnesota flag. That’s their right, but also fuck off. (Note: All J’s Tire, right next door on the corner, does not. They don’t like their neighbors!)
A business front with an old Minnesota flag flying at right.

Most people I know took it in stride and made the adjustments necessary to keep putting food on the table. I was reassured that we had a good public health focus from our state, tribal, and local officials. (I’m blessed to come from a big family, too, and the birth of Zoom helped.)

A lovely personal story with zero analysis of how their past votes on state health care indicate their future path. There’s literally this record-scratch sentence: “Demuth has yet to unveil a health policy platform …” I wonder why! MPR should too!

I have fond memories of incorporating Friends of the Minneapolis Mounted Patrol and getting 501(c)(3) status for it when a group (backed by Downtown Council) was working to get it up and running. Was a pro bono project, circa late 80s/early 90s. To everything there is a season.

Wow, sad -- that she has to have private security, and that the Strib doesn't seem to give a flying about a small, not-young woman's personal security. Moriarty is a hero in my view. She knows her stuff, works hard to get as much as can be accomplished given the system stacked against improvement.

I wrote a comment to this article at the Strib site that noted, rather innocuously I thought - and truthfully - that “the Star Tribune piled on” the criticism of those who put a target on her back from the moment she won the election decisively. The comment wasn’t published.

CDD led to predictable results - and sadly also got rid of the strong K-8 magnet schools - but it would have made sense even then to start doing some sensible right sizing of the real estate. (My 3 youngest sisters had to endure the closing of Mpls West High School, and they have done fine in life.)

So equal protection claims are evaluated under the rational basis standard of review rather than applying strict scrutiny. Morton v Mancari case, if memory serves.

And in this case, the politics being played by Folk and his endorsers are bad politics, wrong side politics, and will move us backward.

My takeaway from this: keep pushing the attack that Folk plays footsie with Republicans & giving them cover to control the Capitol. It’s clearly working.
