Not that specific offer, but I do remember similar offers from what feels like a lifetime ago. Maybe two lifetimes.

I only know the legend, but it's that one of the producers on Der Kommissar heard the hook in Super Freak and wanted to use it in his very next project.

My favorite trivia bit about this song is not just that the central riff is a borrowing from Rick James' "Super Freak" but that the two songs were released just a few months apart in 1981.

This, and the Euthyphro lines in "No Church in the Wild", each amazed professors when I went back to school in the early 2010s. As if hip hop just wasn't a font of creativity, they just didn't expect it.

When relaxed, a bike commuter's perception expands to take in more of the outside world. For a relaxed car commuter, the world narrows to what's inside the car. A stressed bike commuter focuses on their body and the bike. A stressed car commuter is forced to take in more of the outside world.

Not sure if this comforting information, but when I was in school we did research on commuting styles and found that bike commuters and car commuters handle stress in polar opposite ways.

Yeah I've been getting the $150 price point for years and been pretty happy with the results. Sure it's 2-3 year old technology, but I'm also not jumping out balloons in the stratosphere. My action isn't cutting edge so my action cameras don't need to be cutting edge.

I've been buying used action cameras from MPB (www.mpb.com) for about five years now. That'll be a more durable option than mounting a smartphone. Then you'll just need a mount that fits your near/far needs.

Oh, wow, thanks for the heads up. We've been getting the Costco's 12-packs and it looks like they raised the price by $2 to $16. They're also low/out in a bunch of metro locations so there might be some messy macro-level issue right now.

Alternatively, I do wish this fate upon them.
Single panel comic from The Parking Lot is Full, by Jack McClaren and Pat Spacek.

Main image has a solitary person in a trench coat looking past the fourth wall, wide eyed with panic. Around them are uniformly dressed characters, darker, also in trench coats but also wearing hats. The ones facing the main character are all focused on moving past them. The ones behind the character are looking back at the main character with the ones farther to the right looking more fantastical and ghoulish.

Caption:
Little-known Fact #839: There are only twenty-three people alive today, and you're one of them; everyone else you know just *looks* human to lull you into not searching for the other twenty-two. Lonely? You *should* be.

Not the same category, but two days ago LinkedIn suggested a job as a buyer for a large liquor store in Houston, TX. Cool? But, no. (Though did have a moment of wondering if they were expanding into the metro area. That'd be wild.)

The legal concept is 'escheat' and it ensures that if no person can be found as an owner that the state acts as owner of last resort. In Minnesota it's a mix of the Dept. of Commerce, Attorney General, and the State Executive Council that manage what is, essentially, unclaimed property.
010
bjmacke @strangelove.net · 21/08/2026
Short term the property reverts to the state. They have an obligation to find any relatives who would legally inherit it. If no heirs are found it remains the property of the state with varying outcomes depending on the situation.

So, all things being equal (lack of control/consent, degree of gore involved) I'd say the video game violence is worse. No limits to what's done to the victim, fewer content restrictions in the medium, and the intended target market all feel like contributing factors in that.

bjmacke @strangelove.net · 19/08/2026
Now for the huge caveat: This reaction means I heavily curate my experiences with both of them. TV gore is likely more memorable because it happens most often when I don't control the presentation. I have far more control over which video games I consume.

bjmacke @strangelove.net · 19/08/2026
This is anecdotal, but that sounds okay in this circumstance. I have hyperphantasia to the point where people talking about injuries cause a kind of pain in my mind while I visualize it. A similar kind of pain happens sometimes with video games, but is far more likely to happen with television.

So, funny enough, it's not a cut-and-dry answer. We did have, and lose, the Ford F-150 plant in St. Paul as part of the general decline of auto manufacturing in the US. And while not part of the metro area, the Iron Range decline was tied heavily to the Rust Belt.
