When enough children arrived, he would materialize in a second body, a child’s body. Once, he waded away from the rest of them and glanced down at his reflection in a calmer part of the water. His younger self stared back at him. When the children left, so did this other Wuyin, shunting him back to his adult body.

The Stars My Destination by Alfred Bester  reviewed by Paul March-Russell (Part of our new monthly Vintage SFF Reviews column!) Link ⬇️ strangehorizons.com/wordpress/no...
cover of The Stars My Destination by Alfred Bester featuring a man with striped and curled mark on his face with an otherworldly building with thin spires in the background all overlayed in neon yellow and green.

Quote
By inserting a romance into his novel, Bester not only derails the revenge narrative, he also foregrounds that science fiction (despite the epical pretensions of some of its texts) is a romance. That its proper business is to be improper, to distract, to play, to work in images.

Palaces of the Crow somehow manages to be both a heartbreaking and heartwarming read. It challenges the reader to imagine a life that is less individualistic and more community-oriented, but, more than that, it challenges the reader to maintain hope for the future even when it seems hopeless.

There are moments of surreal comedy throughout the novel, there are passages that amount to extraordinarily vivid and humane character studies, there are exchanges of dialogue in which neither interlocutor manages a single complete sentence but which still convey a precise message.

cover of The Icarus Coda by Timothy Zahn featuring a view from behind two people in space suits looking down from a cliff.

Quote
Even without having read most or all of the preceding books in the saga, Coda is an enjoyable read for anyone who likes competent characters who remain calm under fire, twisty plot dilemmas, and narrative twists perpetrated against both the protagonists and the reader.
