I baked a cake today. Yes, it was from a box mix, but I baked it and it's mine :-) I've always enjoyed cooking, but baking just wasn't on my radar much. I've done a few pies, some breads, and now a cake. 10/10 would do again.

Mindy Carlson is back this week on @screensleuthspod.bsky.social to talk all about the reverential, post-modern, and groundbreaking stuff happening in 1981's THE GREAT MUPPET CAPER. Guess how many minutes we spend reminiscing about when the Muppets were for adults? (a lot) youtu.be/-PKTjZIwAEQ?...

So what happened was, I got out of my chair to refill my drink. One of my dogs got into the chair. I relocated to the couch, and now she's in my lap, which was her plan all along. My laptop is balancing on the arm of the couch. What could possibly go wrong?

Brown and white dog claiming her space on my lap and then some while I'm sitting on the couch with my headphones. Also i'm wearing a shirt with a chess puzzle by Paul Morphy printed on it because I am a huge nerd. And there's curtains over the window and pictures and a lamp on the wall.

I'm terrible at tributes, esp. for celebrities. But Dolly Parton's compassion and advocacy always struck a chord with me. If you're trying to process her passing and are able to donate, supporting her Imagination Library is as good of a tribute as I can think of. donate.imaginationlibrary.com

Been kind of down most of the day, but storms blew through this evening, cleared the air out and dropped the temp about 15 degrees. Now I feel...lighter somehow? All the yuck and bad news and <everything!> is still there. But for a little while at least, things don't feel so oppressive.

Finished writing a short story today. Little over 5k words. Been a while since I've done one of those. Was nice to finish something and relatively quickly too (started it over the weekend). Now debating if I'll revisit an abandoned project or start something new. 🖋️📚

My writing process involves a lot of noodling around. I have SO. MANY. DRAFTS. started, some tens of thousands of words long. They almost always lack conflict, I think because i'm trying to figure out a new set of characters and circumstances, and that's just how I do it.

I don't know where the fuck this story I'm writing is going, but I do know that I have aches in my neck, back, right knee, & both feet (thanks, plantar fasciitis). Also my dog rolled in something & I kinda just want to hide in a dark closet with some tea (for the taste and smell).

Kinda nervous to post any good news in the midst of <gestures wildly> all this, but after nearly 15 months of planning and countless false starts, I've FiNALLY completed a draft for the 5th book in my mystery series. I can has sleep now?

I sell very few ebooks, so the news from @draft2digital.bsky.social about charging an annual maintenance fee is especially gutting. They already upped the price of their print books this year, so now I'm basically getting charged twice if I stay with them.

Tonight's toffee experiment failed. However, I have a lovely buttery caramel to dip my apples in, which is what I'm now doing.

001

Chris Stout @stoutwriter.bsky.social · 14/12/2025

Toffee mixture passed the cold water test. Side note: watching it crystalize like that is pretty cool. Even if it doesn't set properly, that was almost worth the price of admission.

000

Chris Stout @stoutwriter.bsky.social · 14/12/2025

Also I fully expect this first attempt to go sideways. Apparently my cooking thermometer went splut and didn't get replaced, so I'll be doing the cold water test to check for doneness. Goin' old school here!

000

Chris Stout @stoutwriter.bsky.social · 14/12/2025

I make a pretty decent homemade peanut butter cup, but I wanted to try something different. best part about making toffee so far? 1 pot and 1 dish to pour it into.

000

Chris Stout @stoutwriter.bsky.social · 14/12/2025

My other grandmother would make a hard candy called humbugs that was like a minty hard taffy. I'm not sure if anyone still has that recipe, but apparently it was super hard to make right and required the air temp to be an exact number.

000

Chris Stout @stoutwriter.bsky.social · 14/12/2025

When I was a kid, one of my grandmothers would make the most amazing fudge I'd ever had. We've got her recipe, but something is wrong in it, because it's never turned out right.
