In 1180, Henry II wanted to thank the monks of The Virgin Mary & St. Andrew in Thetford for their hospitality. But what to get the abbot who has everything? Eels. Lots of eels. The grateful king donated the annual eel-rents from local fisheries, for a total of 12,775 eels. 🗃️🧪

It's January 23, & you want to know, don't you? You want to know which historical figure bought eels on this date. Of course you do. It was Cardinal Wolsey! In 1525, his kitchen account books show an expenditure of 16d. for "eels to roast." There you are. Now go enjoy your day! 🗃️🧪

He is looking to your left, and there's no indication that he even knows you're here. His neck and chin look fat; he is very jowly, like he's trying out for the part of the bulldog in the Christmas pageant. Wolsey is pointing with two fingers. He might be blessing someone, or he might be indicating that he wants two eels. It's impossible to tell from the way I've clipped the image.

Not for nothing, but "Sampson Strong" is a wonderful name, and I like to think that it's a descriptive title. Adjectival Nominalism. He's not just strong, friends. He's Sampson Strong.
