Andy Burnham must listen to scientists warnings and think back to those families who lost their homes to this summer’s wildfires, the UK farmers struggling to grow food in the drought, and the lives lost in the floods in Nepal – not the self-interested demands of oil companies.

In the most optimistic scenario, and assuming none of its gas is exported, Jackdaw would provide just 2% of UK gas demand over its ~10 year lifetime. After 50 years of drilling, the UK has burned most of its gas and the majority of what’s left in the basin is oil for export.

We urgently need to phase out oil and gas drilling. At such a critical time, when the impacts of climate change are being felt here and around the world, the UK government must not knowingly breach its international climate commitments.

Instead, Rosebank will fuel the climate crisis, and funnel billions in profits to the developers – Shell, Equinor and Ithaca Energy - whilst the UK public shoulder over 80% of the development costs thanks to generous tax breaks.

Rosebank is a bad deal for the UK. This disaster project would not lower bills, or make any meaningful impact to UK energy security. Nor would it stem the decline in North Sea jobs, which have more than halved in the past decade, despite new field approvals.
