I'm bleakly fascinated with the 21st century's ability to exploit new parts of the human experience. First COVID forced you to explain to adults that they should care about other people. Now it's AI stripping out the basic purpose of art and communication. It's all techno-solipsism.

Were I to construct a pair of middle fingers as big as the sky, stretching from horizon to horizon in an overpowering display of nonverbal profanity, unavoidable, unignorable, it would not approach the depth or breadth to which this guy needs to fuck off.

Japan’s cautious approach to growth and staff retention once seemed old-fashioned and unambitious. Against a backdrop of AAA failed gambles, gratuitous executive compensation and uncontrolled costs, I spoke to experts who explained why that conservative stance has never felt more modern.

If you were one of the many people I talked to at PAX West 2026 who were confused why Washington's Secretary of State had a booth in the expo hall: me too. Fortunately, I am occasionally moved to do a Journalism and I went to ask him directly. This is the story:

Pretty bummed about this one. I'd covered Polyarc a lot in the last few years, and met a bunch of the team on a couple of occasions. They'd even given me one of their Quill statuettes.

My big games-industry conspiracy theory is that, around 2005, some dark cadre of game publishers (not developers) realized they had an opportunity to jump headfirst into a media environment that had not yet evolved a functional critical apparatus and they went straight in up to the elbows.

Woke up this morning to a press release from a PR agency triumphantly announcing a showcase of 100+ upcoming video games, and it's got me unusually spun out. Maybe we should wrestle these floodgates shut for a while, huh? Let's put out fewer games. Just hold fast 'til 2028. There's no time.

"Drive-In Reviews" on WLUP in the '90s (and then Comedy Central for all of 5 episodes) was a huge part of my cinematic upbringing, and is responsible for the phrase "quality kill" being part of my vocabulary. I didn't know Tony Fitzpatrick had died until today. Good dude.

A comics article I've pitched a couple of places but never gotten approved: Back in 1988-1990, Chris Claremont kept planting all these hints in the X-books about some forthcoming apocalyptic war between superhumans that could destroy Earth and/or cause a mutant dystopia. It never happened, natch.

One of the primary drivers of modern streaming video is a 14-year-old movie-making program that comes free with Steam and which, by now, could run on a particularly big potato clock. GenAI dudes never understand their own argument. Their arms are too short to box with children, let alone God.

game developers are not greedy, stupid cowards. if there is an obvious issue with a game, either they knew on their own or someone told them, and something then happened *higher on the paygrade* that kept them from fixing it

Jean Grey is significantly more interesting without Scott and they shouldn't have immediately gotten back together after her big resurrection in 2017. Tom Taylor's utopian take on Jean was a genuinely good direction for the character and Krakoa derailed it. Now she's Phoenix again.

Claremont's X-Men is a useful example of the old truism that in order to write good comics, you need be broadly well-read outside of the medium. Claremont wears many of his non-comics influences on his sleeve, particularly Heinlein, and his books are significantly better for it.

The announcement of a sequel to THE TALISMAN has me finally getting around to reading King and Straub's BLACK HOUSE. It's a bit weird, in that it feels more like something from King's '80s "cocaine era" than anything he's written since. The narrator is not merely unreliable but untrustworthy.
