It was also my first interdisciplinary project at the intersection of economics and empirical legal studies, and I learned a great deal from combining legal data and legal reasoning with an economics perspective. 12/12

Huge credit goes to my co-author Dmitrii, who led the work of assembling and coding these cases using court records from both countries in two languages. 11/12

This project was special for me for two reasons. It was my first project not based on administrative data, but on data extracted from legal documents, without which the paper would not have been possible. 10/12

5️⃣ Enforcement is not insulated from global political events The results suggest that international conflict can weaken not only trade flows and diplomatic relations, but also the legal infrastructure that supports cross-border commerce. 8/12
100
Stanislav Avdeev @stnavdeev.com · 21/07/2026
4️⃣ The financial stakes were substantial Back-of-the-envelope calculations suggest that, over 2014–2019, the decline in enforcement left approximately $100 million in Ukrainian claims and $180 million in Russian claims uncollected. 7/12
110
Stanislav Avdeev @stnavdeev.com · 21/07/2026
3️⃣ Appeal courts did not solve the problem Even after appeal, the enforcement of Ukrainian decisions in Russia and Russian decisions in Ukraine remained significantly lower than before the conflict. 6/12
100
Stanislav Avdeev @stnavdeev.com · 21/07/2026
2️⃣ Courts made exceptional legal safeguards routine Courts increasingly relied on discretionary legal grounds, including public policy exceptions, to refuse enforcement. 5/12
100
Stanislav Avdeev @stnavdeev.com · 21/07/2026
Here is what we find: 1️⃣ Enforcement of judgments and arbitral awards fell sharply After 2014, Ukrainian decisions became much less likely to be enforced in Russia, and the same pattern emerged for Russian decisions in Ukraine. 4/12
100
Stanislav Avdeev @stnavdeev.com · 21/07/2026
Put simply, enforcement means that if a court in one country says someone must pay, a court in another country helps make that happen. 3/12

Stanislav Avdeev @stnavdeev.com · 21/07/2026
We study this question in Russia and Ukraine following the annexation of Crimea in 2014. We use a difference-in-differences design comparing the enforcement of Russian and Ukrainian decisions before and after the conflict with that of decisions from other countries. 2/12

Just published in the @jpube.bsky.social “The Impact of International Conflict on Cross-Border Commercial Dispute Resolution” with Dmitrii Shchetinin Do judges apply legal rules in the same way when relations between their countries break down? 1/12

University as a Melting Pot: Long-term Effects of Internationalization
(Forthcoming Article) - This paper provides the first evidence on the impact of exposure to international students on the long-term outcomes of native students. I combine unique survey and administrative data from the Netherlands covering one million students across three decades and employ an across-cohort design. I find that exposure to international students leads natives to (i) form social ties with non-natives, (ii) hold more positive attitudes towards migration and learning about other cultures, and (iii) seek opportunities abroad. Notably, I find precisely estimated zero effects on employment, income, entrepreneurship, and the share of international co-workers up to 25 years after university entry.

I recently gave an interview about my paper on the long-term impact of internationalisation in the Netherlands. We discussed findings showing that studying with international students makes natives more culturally open and internationally oriented, without compromising their local economic success.

The article discusses findings from my recent research showing that exposure to international students during university has lasting effects on social cohesion and attitudes with no negative effects on the labor market outcomes.

🚀 I’m excited to share that I’m on the #EconSky job market this year! In my #EconJMP, I study how teachers in Finnish upper secondary schools impact students’ socio-emotional skills – and the labor market returns of these effects! (🧵, 1/N)

Policy implication Restricting international student inflows may reduce long-term social integration and openness, without improving labour outcomes for native students. The full open-access paper is available here:  www.ifo.de/en/cesifo/pu...

Effects depend on context Social-integration gains are largest in: - Non-STEM fields, - Larger programs, - Programs with more gender balance, - Exposure to international students from culturally proximate European countries. Competitive and male-dominated environments show weaker effects.

Stanislav Avdeev @stnavdeev.com · 26/11/2025
No evidence of negative labor-market effects  Perhaps most important for current policy debates: increased exposure has precisely estimated zero effects on employment, income, entrepreneurship, and workplace diversity up to 25 years after enrollment.

Stanislav Avdeev @stnavdeev.com · 26/11/2025
Effects on attitudes are sizable and comparable to those found in the contact hypothesis literature. Exposure also makes native students more internationally mobile: they become more likely to emigrate later in life.
110
Stanislav Avdeev @stnavdeev.com · 26/11/2025
Attitudes become more open and international  Native students exposed to more international peers report: - Greater satisfaction with learning about other cultures, - More positive attitudes towards migration and European integration, - Less agreement with anti-immigration neighborhood sentiments.

Stanislav Avdeev @stnavdeev.com · 26/11/2025
Many of these relationships are formed outside the university, indicating genuine preference shifts rather than simple “meeting opportunities.”
110
Stanislav Avdeev @stnavdeev.com · 26/11/2025
Here is what I found: Social integration increases  Exposure to international students makes native students: - More likely to cohabit with a non-native 15 years later, - More likely to marry a non-native 15 years later.

Stanislav Avdeev @stnavdeev.com · 26/11/2025
I study the impact of exposure to international students in the first year of a bachelor’s program in the Netherlands. I exploit idiosyncratic cohort-to-cohort variation in the share of international students within programs. I use linked admin and survey data on one million students over 30 years.
