The lockdown at Halifax West yesterday was the result of a swatting call placed by some fuckhead in Florida (Weirdly this was very close to one of the rumors we heard yesterday, so someone blabbed) BUT WHAT THE SHIT Keep your nonsense in Florida, assholes

At a Christmas tree farm in October
An evergreen tree, with its branches lopped off for the first 15 feet or so from the ground, and topped by a perfectly formed Christmas tree. In the background, rolling hills covered in mixed woods, with a lot of orange and gold hardwood foliage mixed

I really want to get mine before the 15th, but I clearly have not been surveilling the site as closely as you have. So I appreciate the good news!

Forty years ago (yesterday!), the people of Canada were awarded the Nansen medal "in recognition of the major and sustained contribution made to the cause of refugees in their country and throughout the world over the years." The chatter about refugee decisions brought it to mind.

The muddier, research-based story is the more interesting story, of course. Yes, technologies change the kinds of work people do. But the specifics of the tech matters in where the changes land and the kind of social relations that ensue.

Most work is new work, long-term study of U.S. census data shows
Most U.S. workers are in occupations that have only emerged widely since 1940, according to a large-scale study of 80 years of U.S. census data, led by MIT economist David Autor.

It's always rewarding to pay attention to that sceptical inner voice saying "Really?!" "The majority" becomes "6 out of 10" becomes "we measured changes in the category labels used in the US census, and found two different kinds of change" Sources and links threaded below
This is partly a failure of imagination optimist saying. A 2024 study by economists at the Massachusetts institute of technology found the majority of job occupations in the US - including novelties such as tattooists and hypnotherapists - only emerged after 1940*We estimate that about 6 out of 10 jobs people are doing at present didn't exist in 1940," says Autor, co-author of a newly published paper. "A lot of the things that we do today, no one was doing at that point. Most contemporary jobs require expertise that didn't exist back then, and was not relevant"

There's a great anecdote in a birth control volunteers memoir (recalling the 1920s) who recalled suggesting to a farm wife that she cover a pitcher of milk sitting on the counter because flies were swimming in it. The farm wife thought those flies weren't doing any harm!

Is it coincidental that I just posted something that mentioned social credit? Before it was a party, it was absolutely a movement.

Folks just can't let go of the idea 'social movement' means 'left progressive.' False, egotistical, dangerous. I need to make a sign to tap.

Having immersed myself in letters from the public to Canadian finance ministers, 1917-71, I can confirm that exposure to "stupid" was an occupational hazard Esp in the 30s-50s, their offices were remarkably patient in composing substantive, patient replies Social credit tried their patience tho.

Bluff Wilderness trail, Indian Hill loop. In the area of the pale pink dot I've added to this map. (If you want to do it as an out and back and are willing to braid some rickety bridges on part of the Pot Lake loop, you can do it as a shorter out-and- back) But Upper Marsh Lake area is great, too

Hope you were out to enjoy it. Classic NS fall day!
Just an ordinary scene on the trail. White granite and pale green lichen in the foreground. Long dark shadows. Midground, a riot of red yellow light green and dark green. And a bright blue sky, cerulean at the top, with white fluffy clouds

Paid a visit to a couple of my fave boulders yesterday. 17km round trip, but worth it.
Two large, somewhat square, erratic boulders. In the foreground a smaller Boulder and small spruce tree. In the background hints of orange Fall foliage. A bright blue Autumn sky

If we live in a world where, RW concludes, "the bond market truly can intimidate everyone," doesn't that story belong on the same shelves with histories of smallpox, great battles, and refrigeration? History of medicine doesn't go in the health section. Business history is History, ppl!

Q: What's the most important urbanism concept you'd want to get across to people? A: The urban geometry problem. As cities grow in population they have to get better and better at using space. Most of the things you hate about cities come from a failure to understand and apply this concept.

I mean, look at RW's subtitle: "The epic history of how bonds built the modern world"! Does this belong on a shelf next to Excel for Dummies and Crucial Conversations? No.

Excited to have in my hands @robinwigglesworth.ft.com's A Fabulous Debt. Grumpy that the bookseller had it in the Business section, not History. in 2017, I was similarly annoyed when my tax history book was treated this way. I wrote about it: www.halifaxexaminer.ca/government/p...

Grand Manan definitely more defensible. Those west-side cliffs! But I dunno. Retreating from Campobello lands you at the top of a tacyical slippery slope. As goes Campobello, so goes Deer Island.
