Never heard anything untoward about them besides being a bunch of argumentative band guys in their 20s in NYC. Former bassist Carlos Dengler was widely purported to be the source of a lot of that in-band tension, but I never heard of any of them being anything worse than that. Album still rules.

It’s a marked evolution in sonic choices—new sounds, live drums, a heavier emphasis on clearly discernible samples—while still inhabiting the mid-tempo, tape warbling synth paradise the group has comfortably occupied for nearly 30 years of (increasingly sporadic) studio album releases.

It’s also just objectively the worst use of the tech—making images/audio/video is vastly more expensive in compute than making text, and the output is bland *at best*. Meanwhile, the one and only thing LLMs are actually good for (writing code you can TEST for correctness) is comparatively cheap!

With 23 years of perspective, I think I can finally definitively state that the back half of The Postal Service’s “Give Up” is the better half, that every song on that side is better than “Such Great Heights”, and that the album as a whole feels dated in a way that DCFC’s “Transatlanticism” doesn’t.
