Interesting. I thought it was more diverse than that. I also figured being such an international hub of commerce, tourism, etc would inoculate it from reactionary politics. Obviously not though

Our media sucks so bad. So eager to do stories and too lazy to do any background checks or provide any context about the people they interview

Isn’t São Paulo pretty urban, diverse, and educated? Why would they vote for Bolsonaro? Id think Bolsonaro’s reactionary politics would be more popular in homogeneous areas, not diverse.

The establishment bros who aren’t directly impacted by the fascists that control the right are just so woefully out of touch. It explains why the Overton window has shifted so much in my lifetime and illustrates our democracy is in the pathetic state it’s in.

Now is not the time to double down on your poorly informed question. It has been explained to you very clearly and to anyone clear minded about the situation, pretty obvious why we should care about Harp. Grow up and thank others for informing you. Don’t double down on stupidity.

He’s saving us from “scary communism” by giving us tons of free money if we vote for his party! Yay! So glad we don’t live under communism!

Like… seriously. What does the NY Times expect me, a reader, to do? Don’t we have law enforcement anymore? Investigate, arrest, and prosecute. Seems like there’s plenty of criming going on. Is… anyone with a badge gonna look at it?

Most still identify with Republicans and vote for them due to the disproportionate influence RW media has. Ruralists always claim to care about kitchen table issues, then vote for the R who campaigns against trans sharia law abortion communism while slashing HC for rural hospitals.

Ruralists are notorious for voting against their own interests. They always claim to be focused on these “kitchen table issues” while voting for the morons who always make these issues worse. We’ll see if their smart enough to vote like they care or if they’ll vote for whatever FB or Fox tells them

I can’t be the only one who thinks of Sam Altman, Peter Thiel, and Brett Kavanaugh when reading this thread, right? Especially Kavanaugh, who seems to the exactly what James is describing.

Isn’t it hard for these losers to fear monger China while their leader and god is yucking it up with Xi as we speak? Or are these voters just too stupid to see the contradiction?

Unless Dems respond in kind when in power, then Republicans will continue to engage with this asymmetrical warfare and move the Overton window forever rightward. They control the narrative that so easily persuades the vast majority of low info voters out there.

Thank you! We really need to stop making excuses for people who voted for this cruelty. They knew what they were voting for. They just thought ICE would ruin the families of others, not theirs.

I don’t think they can. The overall economic incentives (get a Fox News job, become a RW influencer, stay alive, etc) are greater than the political incentives (moderate to win general elections). I’d say the greatest problem in our politics today is the RW media economy. It’s so powerful.

It’s likely not ignorance. In fact, they liked Trump because of the cruelty. They just didn’t think the cruelty would visit them. They thought “he’d hurt the right people.”

Wasn’t that the point? Capture and kill. It’s one less outlet that reports the news. It’s one fewer way we can understand what billionaires, like the Ellisons, are doing. I don’t think the Ellisons ever brought Weiss in to turn a profit. They just knew she’d tank a legit news outlet. And she has.

Liberals like Hayes could benefit by talking to liberals stuck in red states. It’s been this way for a long time. When did Rs in our state try to convince us that vouchers and right to work actually benefitted us? Rs just do stuff, arguments be damned. White male Christ identity is everything

I’m a millennial. Shortly after I graduated from HS the Great Reces hit. Houses were cheap but we couldn’t find jobs. I finally graduated from college and settled in my career, Covid hit. Now housing is crazy expensive. Bleak? Yeah. It would be nice to go 10 yrs w/o republicans ruining the economy

You can tell we're a country of idiots by how easily we're convinced to debate the 1% of trans people who want the right to live their lives authentically and safely and don't negatively impact our lives instead of the billionaires who spend every day making our lives genuinely tangibly worse.

For a certain kind of white man, there is no fear more primal than the fear that the people they have abused will gain power and treat them the same way.

Wait, that can’t be right! The antivaxxers on my FB feed also claimed the 20 election was stolen, that all lives mattered, were huge fans of the Bundy Klan, believed Sandy Hook was staged, said Obamacare had death panels , claimed Obama was a Kenyan Muslim, oh wait I’m seeing a pattern here…

She was the canary in the coal mine of how vapid and ridiculous things were becoming in Silicon Valley. The amount of RW donors she conned and idiotic tech people who saw innovation in her substance free sales pitch was a blinking red light to all of us about Thiel, Zuck, and Musk.

But it’s not a lack of education problem. It’s that a large segment of our population WANTS to believe in certain things that aren’t true. It makes them feel better to be part of an anti-intellectual, anti-civil, anti-establishment conspiratorial cult full of grievance.

Excellent pt. And that would’ve been a really good question to ask. A self-respecting reporter would’ve asked that question and it would’ve made good tv. It’s sad to know that many of us could do a better job holding these politicians to account than those paid big bucks to do it on tv.

I’m sure Kristen Welker will ask every Republican on her show questions about Trump’s unhinged posts.. right? RIGHT? I mean, after all, if we’re gonna talk endlessly about Piker, certainly our “balanced” media will hold to account Donald Trump…

Why doesn’t this reporter go into specifics? Miller isn’t just involved in a divorce, he’s credibly accused of breaking his 2 year old daughter’s collarbone and scalding his wife with boiling water. Make these republicans own that. Don’t let them get away with “divorces are ugly…”

Soooo just like Afghanistan, covid, tanking the economy, the debt, etc etc etc. And the right will bash whatever solutions the Democrats have. And the electorate is so stupid that by 2032 they’ll buy the right wing propaganda and place these idiots right back into power to destroy the country again
010

Once a deal is made, congressional repubs and Fox News will criticize nonstop and half the country will forget who made the mess in the 1st place. By 2032, most of the electorate will have forgotten who had started this war and why. They’ll put repubs back into power. Just like Covid

This is going to end like Covid. We’re going to limp along with this problem until the next Dem pres comes in. Then Dems will have to burn political capital cleaning up this mess.

I lived in Brazil and my friends who survived this told me that it was the worst pain they’d ever felt. They described it as feeling like having the flu, but deep in your bones. Sounded awful. Communities routinely posted flyers reminding residents to upset standing water.

Soooo why are we having to adjust to Tesla? Shouldn’t Tesla be making cars that abide by our rules and laws? If it isn’t safe or requires special treatment from first responders, then maybe it shouldn’t be made?

Undoubtedly, there will be caravans, new Iranian deals, a Ukrainian peace deal, and a health care plan. It’ll all be fleshed out in two weeks, two weeks after the elections but still vote Republican so you get these prizes or else Democrats will usher in trans muslim communism or something.

Wait why doesn’t Trump get any blame but Biden still does? Is it our broken media environment that causes this? What has Trump done to deserve this grace and what did Biden do to deserve such contempt? And why don’t these journalists press these types of questions? Challenge these people, cmon!

What evidence do you have that he loves the country and Democrats don’t? And why keep voting for the party that has caused your state to become so unaffordable? He literally makes fun of the “affordability” issue almost everyday!

Maybe voters wouldn’t elect insane people to run the country if they finally felt the real effects of empowering them? Meaning, the filibuster prevents some of that populist leg from passing. But if it weren’t there maybe voters would think twice before reelecting Sens like Tubberville?
